# scenario-blender-animation

This skill animates characters and objects in Blender using Python scripts. It handles stepped blocking, curve editing, lip sync, and camera-space motion arcs.

## What it does

The skill brings Blender Studio animation methodology to automated workflows. Work stays in stepped keys through a detailed blocking pass before touching Bezier handles. Instead of splining an entire action at once, it isolates the body first while holding facial and finger poses. Scripts in `scripts/bx_anim.py` run on Blender 5.2.1 alongside `bx_review.playblast`.

The agent cannot scrub the timeline directly. It measures motion through per-frame coordinates, spacing plots, camera-space arc checks, and onion-skin snapshots. Handle types adjust timing explicitly: AUTO_CLAMPED keeps holds flat, AUTO cushions settles, and VECTOR sets contacts or sharp hits.

You must install `scenario-blender-expert` first; without this prerequisite, the agent cannot access the Blender 5.2 execution channel or the review loop. By default, animations target 24 frames per second with a locked shot camera.

## Requirements
- Works with: Blender

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add scenario-labs/skills --skill scenario-blender-animation -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/scenario-blender-animation/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/scenario-blender-animation/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add scenario-labs/skills --skill scenario-blender-animation -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/scenario-blender-animation/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add scenario-labs/skills --skill scenario-blender-animation -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/scenario-blender-animation/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install scenario-labs/skills scenario-blender-animation
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/scenario-blender-animation/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add scenario-labs/skills --skill scenario-blender-animation -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/scenario-labs/skills --path skills/dcc/blender/scenario-blender-animation
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/scenario-blender-animation/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add scenario-labs/skills --skill scenario-blender-animation -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- build stepped blocking for character actions with hold pillars
- inspect motion arcs and trajectories in camera space
- animate speech rhythm and jaw shapes for lip sync
- fix knee pops and sliding feet on Rigify armatures

## Example prompts
- Create a stepped blocking pass for the jump action using hold pillars
- Inspect arm motion arcs using bx_anim.py and render a playblast

# Blender animation (character and object)

Expert animation means every frame on screen is a choice: key poses the audience reads, holds and
snaps placed by hand, spacing designed, arcs checked. The Blender Studio stance is to block stepped,
spline late and in parts, and judge from the shot camera at real speed. An agent cannot scrub, so it
measures instead: per-frame positions, spacing charts, arc checks, framing, an onion-skin image, a
curve plot, and a playblast it actually looks at. If a sibling skill named here is missing from your
available skills, ask the user to install it (`npx skills add scenario-labs/skills --skill <name>`);
unattended, proceed from tool schemas and flag the gap.

**REQUIRED BACKGROUND:** scenario-blender-expert (execution channel, review loop, 5.2 API changes).
Shot planning, cameras and animatics belong to scenario-blender-previs-storyboard; building the rig
to scenario-blender-rigging. A clip that guides a render-to-real video model belongs to
scenario-blender-blockout: the model copies keyed limbs as they are, so its cast styles often hand
it a limbless stand-in and let it animate the gait.

Toolkit: [`scripts/bx_anim.py`](scripts/bx_anim.py) (keying, blocking-to-spline, curve checks,
measurement, staging, playblast light, knee-pop, flip and balance checks, onion-skin and curve
images, one-object `bouncing_ball`; API in procedures.md, tested on 5.2.1) and
`bx_review.playblast`.

## Stance (the expert delta)

- **Stay stepped long ("Blocking+").** Hjalti Hjalmarsson: juniors spline too early; computer
  in-betweens are "unintentional interpolated poses" that make notes hard. Keep adding hand-made
  breakdowns while stepped; splining is short and late.
- **Never convert the whole blocking to Bezier.** Rik Schutte: key every main control on every key
  pose, copy each pose to the end of its hold ("pillars"), then spline the body only; face and
  fingers stay stepped until their own pass. Measured on 5.2.1: the naive conversion drifted 84% of
  the next move across a hold, the pillars held at exactly 0.
