# scalability-playbook

Finds bottlenecks from measured metrics, then orders the fixes: indexes, cache, replicas, sharding. Each step comes with a trigger and a monthly cost.

## What it does

The skill walks the agent through a fixed sequence. First a system profile, then a list of bottlenecks with measurements and impact, then strategies sorted by effort. Every item carries a symptom, a trigger and an expected result. Database indexes take a day and speed queries up by 80%; a Redis layer takes two days and cuts database load by 60%.

Higher levels cover read replicas, a load balancer over several servers, a CDN for static assets, background job queues instead of synchronous calls, sharding by `user_id` and a message broker. Cost per month and effort are listed for each. A trigger table sets the thresholds: CPU at 70% warns, 85% is critical, query p95 at 500ms and 1000ms. The phased plan runs from current load to 10x, 100x and 1000x.

There is also a load testing plan built on `hey` and an ROI table per strategy. The skill tells you to measure before optimizing and to validate with load tests before production. Treat the numbers in its examples as illustrations of the method, not as targets for your system — your own thresholds have to come from your own traffic.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill scalability-playbook -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/scalability-playbook/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/scalability-playbook/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill scalability-playbook -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/scalability-playbook/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill scalability-playbook -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/scalability-playbook/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install patricio0312rev/skills scalability-playbook
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/scalability-playbook/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill scalability-playbook -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/patricio0312rev/skills --path architecture/scalability-playbook
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/scalability-playbook/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill scalability-playbook -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- Locate bottlenecks from metrics instead of guesswork
- Order the work from cheap fixes to expensive ones
- Set thresholds that say when to scale
- Estimate the budget for each growth phase
- Validate changes with a load test before shipping

## Example prompts
- analyze bottlenecks in my API and give me a scaling plan
- build a phased growth plan with monthly cost estimates
- what triggers should I set for CPU, memory and query time

# Scalability Playbook

Systematic approach to identifying and resolving scalability bottlenecks.

## Bottleneck Analysis

### Current System Profile

```
Traffic: 1,000 req/min
Users: 10,000 active
Data: 100GB database
Response time: p95 = 500ms
```

### Identified Bottlenecks

#### 1. Database Queries

**Symptom:** Slow page loads (2-3s)
**Measurement:** Query time p95 = 800ms
**Impact:** HIGH - affects all reads
**Trigger:** When p95 >500ms

#### 2. Single Server

**Symptom:** High CPU (>80%)
**Measurement:** Load average >4
**Impact:** MEDIUM - intermittent slowdowns
**Trigger:** When CPU >70%

#### 3. No Caching

**Symptom:** Repeated DB queries
**Measurement:** Cache hit rate = 0%
**Impact:** MEDIUM - unnecessary load
**Trigger:** When query volume >10k/min

## Scaling Strategies (Ordered)

### Level 1: Quick Wins (Days)

#### 1.1 Add Database Indexes

**Problem:** Slow queries
**Solution:**

```sql
CREATE INDEX idx_users_email ON users(email);
CREATE INDEX idx_orders_user_created ON orders(user_id, created_at);
```

**Expected Impact:** 80% faster queries
**Cost:** $0
**Effort:** 1 day

#### 1.2 Enable Query Caching

**Problem:** Repeated queries
**Solution:** Redis cache layer

```typescript
const cached = await redis.get(`user:${userId}`);
if (cached) return JSON.parse(cached);
const user = await db.users.findById(userId);
await redis.setex(`user:${userId}`, 3600, JSON.stringify(user));
```

**Expected Impact:** 60% reduction in DB load
**Cost:** $50/month
**Effort:** 2 days

### Level 2: Horizontal Scaling (Weeks)

#### 2.1 Add Read Replicas

**Problem:** Read-heavy workload
**Solution:** Route reads to replicas

```
Write Load: Primary DB
Read Load: 3x Read Replicas
```

**Expected Impact:** 3x read capacity
**Cost:** $300/month
**Effort:** 1 week

#### 2.2 Load Balancer + Multiple Servers

**Problem:** Single point of failure
**Solution:**

```
ALB
 ├── Server 1
 ├── Server 2
 └── Server 3
```

**Expected Impact:** 3x throughput
**Cost:** $400/month
**Effort:** 1 week

### Level 3: Architecture Changes (Months)

#### 3.1 CDN for Static Assets

**Problem:** Slow asset delivery
**Solution:** CloudFront CDN
**Expected Impact:** 90% faster asset loads
**Cost:** $100/month
**Effort:** 1 week

#### 3.2 Async Processing
