# scaffold-gateables

Adds gateable feature scaffolding to an existing browser game: skin picker, continue-after-death, bonus mode, save slots. Everything stays locked until a monetization layer flips it on.

## What it does

The skill targets a game that already exists and follows the game-creator architecture: `EventBus`, `GameState`, `Constants.js`, `render_game_to_text`. It reads `package.json` to detect the engine, then the core files and the main scene. Before proposing anything it names the core loop in one sentence and commits to leaving that loop alone.

What comes back is a table of 2–3 features at silver and gold tiers. Each row carries an entitlement key, what the feature adds, how the locked path looks, which events fire, and which state fields appear. Implementation then runs in order: `src/systems/Entitlements.js` with a single `isEntitled(key)` check that returns `false`, events appended to `EventBus` as `domain:action`, state fields in `GameState`, constants under a new `GATEABLES` section. No monetization SDK gets installed. The skill leaves one seam for a paywall, subscription or entitlement layer to use later.

The rule that matters most: never gate the core loop. If the game is about jumping, everyone jumps — skins get gated instead. Features stay additive, so free players don't lose anything, and with `isEntitled` returning `false` the game should feel normal rather than broken. Bronze is the default tier and nothing is scaffolded there. For short sessions the skill leans toward cosmetics and conveniences; for long-form games, toward persistence.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PlayableIntelligence/game-creator --skill scaffold-gateables -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/scaffold-gateables/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/scaffold-gateables/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PlayableIntelligence/game-creator --skill scaffold-gateables -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/scaffold-gateables/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PlayableIntelligence/game-creator --skill scaffold-gateables -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/scaffold-gateables/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install PlayableIntelligence/game-creator scaffold-gateables
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/scaffold-gateables/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PlayableIntelligence/game-creator --skill scaffold-gateables -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/PlayableIntelligence/game-creator --path skills/scaffold-gateables
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/scaffold-gateables/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add PlayableIntelligence/game-creator --skill scaffold-gateables -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- add a skin picker without touching the core loop
- offer one continue per session after death
- run a daily seeded challenge with its own leaderboard
- split saves into slots that keep progress
- leave a seam for a paywall without picking an SDK

## Example prompts
- add gateables to the game in `./my-game`, hints: skins continue
- make my game monetizable — propose 2–3 features at silver and gold
- add a daily challenge and save slots

Use when the user says "add gateables", "scaffold monetizable features", "add skin picker", "add continue-after-death", "make my game monetizable", or "add premium hooks". Do NOT use for Play.fun SDK integration (use monetize-game) or generic gameplay features (use add-feature).

## Performance Notes

- Take your time to understand the game before proposing features
- Quality is more important than speed — wrong gateables hurt the game permanently
- Do not skip the locked-path verification in Step 4

# Scaffold Gateables

Add gateable features to an existing game. This skill produces *hooks* — skin pickers, continue-after-death flows, bonus modes, save slots, daily challenges — each wired through EventBus with a single capability-check seam (`isEntitled(key)`). It does NOT add any specific monetization SDK (Play.fun, sub.games, Stripe, etc.); it produces the scaffolding that any paywall, subscription, or entitlement layer can later switch on.

The default state is everything locked — `isEntitled(key)` returns `false` for all keys. The game must feel completely normal in that state. When a downstream monetization layer flips an entitlement on, the gateable feature lights up.

## Core Principles

Use these to reason about what to propose and what to reject. They are rules, not guidelines.

1. **Never gate the core loop.** If the game is about jumping, everyone jumps. Gate skins, not gravity.
