# scaffold-dotnet-test-project

Creates or repairs a .NET test project: finds why CI discovers zero tests and wires the project into the solution file CI actually uses.

## What it does

The skill kicks in when tests pass locally but CI finds nothing. It inspects the repository and picks one path: scaffold a test project, add the missing `ProjectReference` to the production project, or register an existing project in `.sln`, `.slnx` or `.slnf`. If everything is already wired, it changes no files — that is a valid outcome, not a failure.

Before editing, it reads the repository conventions: neighbouring test projects, the framework (xUnit, NUnit, MSTest), target framework, nullable and implicit usings, and where package versions come from — `Directory.Packages.props`, `Directory.Build.props` or `global.json`. For xUnit v3 with MTP it keeps `<OutputType>Exe</OutputType>` and `<UseMicrosoftTestingPlatformRunner>true</UseMicrosoftTestingPlatformRunner>`.

Templates are the trap here. A plain `dotnet new xunit` often emits xUnit 2 packages, so in a repository with centrally managed `xunit.v3` you want an xUnit v3 template or a minimal SDK project instead. The skill also looks for `.agents/skill-overlays/dotnet-test/scaffold-dotnet-test-project.md` at the repository root and applies it only when the frontmatter declares `core: dotnet-test/scaffold-dotnet-test-project`, `binding-revision: "1"` and `mode: extend`.

It does not author tests in an already-wired project and does not run them — that is `code-testing`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill scaffold-dotnet-test-project -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/scaffold-dotnet-test-project/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/scaffold-dotnet-test-project/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill scaffold-dotnet-test-project -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/scaffold-dotnet-test-project/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill scaffold-dotnet-test-project -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/scaffold-dotnet-test-project/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dotnet/skills scaffold-dotnet-test-project
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/scaffold-dotnet-test-project/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill scaffold-dotnet-test-project -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dotnet/skills --path plugins/dotnet-test/skills/scaffold-dotnet-test-project
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/scaffold-dotnet-test-project/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill scaffold-dotnet-test-project -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- scaffold a .NET test project for a specific production project
- restore a lost `ProjectReference` to the production project
- register a test project in the `.sln`, `.slnx` or `.slnf` that CI uses
- work out why tests pass directly but CI discovers zero
- match the framework and package versions to repository conventions

## Example prompts
- tests pass locally but CI discovers zero — find out why the test project is invisible
- create a test project for this production project and wire it into the CI solution filter
- the tests exist but the ProjectReference to the main project is gone — repair the wiring

# Scaffold or Repair a .NET Test Project

Create the smallest missing test container or repair only the missing wiring.
The goal is test discovery through the repository's real build entry point, not
a preferred solution layout.

## Repository overlay

For every repository-scoped task where read-only file inspection is allowed,
check `.agents/skill-overlays/dotnet-test/scaffold-dotnet-test-project.md` at
the repository root before any other discovery. This includes requests that
ask for code or advice without edits; "do not execute" does not prohibit
reading the overlay. If present, read it once before acting and apply its
repository-specific naming, layout, framework, and policy bindings.
Before applying it, require its frontmatter to declare
`core: dotnet-test/scaffold-dotnet-test-project`, `binding-revision: "1"`, and
`mode: extend`. If any value is missing or different, report the mismatch and
continue using this skill's portable guidance without applying the overlay.
Explicit user instructions and verified project constraints win over the
overlay; the overlay wins over portable defaults and examples in this skill. If
the file is present but unreadable or conflicts with the repository, report the
problem
and continue with portable guidance, without the overlay, subject to verified
