# scaffold-cli

Bootstraps a new TypeScript CLI and npm package from pinned templates: configs, source, CI and publishing. Useful when you start a tool from scratch.

## What it does

The skill turns an empty folder into a repo npm can publish. It runs eight steps: gather project info, create the directory structure, generate configs, generate source, write docs, run post-scaffold commands, validate, then bootstrap GitHub and npm. Templates live in `references/` and encode the whole toolchain: tsdown instead of tsup, vitest instead of jest, oxlint and oxfmt via ultracite, `node:util` `styleText` instead of chalk, `@clack/prompts` instead of ora.

Step 1 asks only for what you did not supply: package name, description, bin, repo, author. The `{{repo}}` value has to match the GitHub `owner/name` exactly, because npm provenance rejects a publish whose `repository.url` differs from the repo it came from. Worth checking the name before the first release, not after.

You need a shell, Git, Node.js, pnpm and npm registry access. Remote publishing requires authentication with the relevant account. The skill is not for Next.js apps, not for the structure of an existing codebase, and not for shipping a release of a package you already have — the set covers those with other skills.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mblode/agent-skills --skill scaffold-cli -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/scaffold-cli/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/scaffold-cli/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mblode/agent-skills --skill scaffold-cli -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/scaffold-cli/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mblode/agent-skills --skill scaffold-cli -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/scaffold-cli/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mblode/agent-skills scaffold-cli
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/scaffold-cli/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mblode/agent-skills --skill scaffold-cli -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mblode/agent-skills --path skills/scaffold-cli
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/scaffold-cli/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mblode/agent-skills --skill scaffold-cli -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mblode/agent-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/scaffold-cli/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- scaffold a TypeScript CLI from scratch
- set up a tsdown build with dual outputs
- wire changesets and an npm publish workflow
- get the first CI run green
- generate AGENTS.md and README for a new package

## Example prompts
- scaffold a TypeScript CLI called md-tools
- start a new npm package with the bin md
- scaffold the CLI template and get CI green

# Scaffold CLI

- **IS:** bootstrapping a brand-new TypeScript CLI or npm package (Node 24, TypeScript 7) from the pinned templates in `references/`, through to a green first CI run and a package npm can publish over OIDC.
- **IS NOT:** a Next.js web app (use `scaffold-nextjs`), folder structure or module contracts for an existing codebase (use `codebase-architecture`), auditing an existing CLI's ergonomics (use `dx-audit`), or shipping a release of an existing package (use `autoship`).

The templates encode the house toolchain. Substitute project values and verify template APIs against installed package versions; repair proven incompatibilities instead of blindly reproducing them. The toolchain is the opinion: tsdown not tsup, vitest not jest, oxlint and oxfmt via ultracite not eslint or prettier, `node:util` `styleText` not chalk, `@clack/prompts` not ora. Swapping any of them or restructuring the layout produces a repo the templates' notes no longer describe.

## Reference Files

| File | Read When |
|------|-----------|
| `references/scaffold-configs.md` | Step 3: package.json, tsconfig, tsdown, gitignore, license, changeset config, GitHub Actions |
| `references/scaffold-source.md` | Steps 4-5: src/cli.ts, src/index.ts, src/types.ts, AGENTS.md, README.md, skills/SKILL.md |
| `references/agent-friendly-cli.md` | Step 4, only when a command takes an identifier, path, or URL, or mutates state: input validation, dry-run, confirmation, schema |
| `references/post-scaffold.md` | Steps 6-8: post-scaffold commands, the lefthook.yml replacement, validation checklist, GitHub and npm bootstrap, troubleshooting |

## Scaffold Workflow

Copy this checklist to track progress:

```text
Scaffold progress:
- [ ] Step 1: Gather project info
- [ ] Step 2: Create directory structure
- [ ] Step 3: Generate config files
- [ ] Step 4: Generate source files
- [ ] Step 5: Generate docs and skill
- [ ] Step 6: Run post-scaffold commands
- [ ] Step 7: Validate scaffold
- [ ] Step 8: Bootstrap GitHub and npm (with the user's go-ahead)
```

### Step 1: Gather project info

Ask only for what the user didn't provide:

| Variable | Example | Default | Used in |
|----------|---------|---------|---------|
| `{{name}}` | `md-tools` | required | package.json name, README title, npm package |
| `{{description}}` | `CLI tool to convert content to markdown` | required | package.json, README, SKILL.md |
