# sasjs-core

Keeps SAS macro code in line with the @sasjs/core library: naming rules, folder prefixes, tests and lint. Handy when you write macros and would rather reuse one that exists.

## What it does

The skill spells out how @sasjs/core expects macros to look. One macro per file, filename matching the macro name, definitions written as `%macro x();`, calls left without a trailing semicolon, every macro variable declared `%local`. Filerefs and librefs come from `mf_getuniquefileref` and `mf_getuniquelibref` rather than hand-rolled names. Indentation is two spaces, tabs and trailing whitespace are out, the hard line limit is 300 characters, and 80 is the target.

Prefixes map to folders: `mf_` and `mp_` live in `base/`, `mm_` in `meta/`, `mmx_` in `metax/`, `mv_` in `viya/`, `ms_` in `server/`, `mx_` in `xplatform/`. A `mf_` macro hands back a value you can use in an expression; `mp_` produces code or statements. One rule stands out: `mp_` macros must not reach for `mx_` ones. Platform dispatch belongs to the `mx_` suite, so a macro that needs platform-specific behaviour should move to `xplatform/` instead. Before writing anything new, the skill says to look for an existing utility — `mp_abort`, `mf_existds`, `mf_existvar`, `mf_existfileref`, `mf_getuser`, `mp_jsonout`, `mp_ds2ddl`, `mp_hashdataset` are already there. The old `mf_abort` survives only for backwards compatibility.

Aborting has traps. Calling `%mp_abort` inside an `%if/%else` block or a loop lets the macro processor run further statements before the abort lands, and inside a loop the job can spin instead of failing. Pass the condition through `iftrue=` and place the abort after `%end`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sasjs/skills --skill sasjs-core -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/sasjs-core/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/sasjs-core/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sasjs/skills --skill sasjs-core -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/sasjs-core/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sasjs/skills --skill sasjs-core -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/sasjs-core/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install sasjs/skills sasjs-core
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/sasjs-core/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sasjs/skills --skill sasjs-core -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/sasjs/skills --path sasjs-core
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/sasjs-core/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sasjs/skills --skill sasjs-core -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- pick an existing macro instead of writing a new one
- catch macro variables leaking out of local scope
- abort cleanly when a loop stops making progress
- sort macros into folders and prefixes for SAS 9, Viya and SASjs server
- add a Doxygen header and get past `sasjs lint`

## Example prompts
- Write `mf_getcols` following @sasjs/core conventions, with a Doxygen header.
- Check my macro for scope leakage using `%mp_assertscope`.
- Move the abort in this loop after `%end` and drive it with `iftrue=`.

# @sasjs/core - SAS Macro Library

@sasjs/core is an MIT-licensed library of production-quality SAS macros for SAS application development, portable across SAS 9 (meta), Viya, and SASjs server.

## Coding standards (mandatory)

- One macro per file; filename must match the macro name (lowercase, no spaces)
- Macro definitions must use parentheses: `%macro x();` not `%macro x;`
- Macro *calls* are NOT terminated with a semicolon: `%my_macro()` not `%my_macro();`
- All macro variables must be declared `%local` to prevent scope leakage
- Always use `mf_getuniquefileref` when assigning filerefs, and `mf_getuniquelibref` when assigning librefs (never hardcode or hand-roll unique references)
- 2-space indentation, no tabs, no trailing spaces, no invisible characters, max line length 300 (hard lint limit) but keep lines to 80 chars max where possible
- Every file must have a Doxygen header:

```sas
/**
  @file
  @brief One-line description of the macro
  <h4> SAS Macros </h4>
  @li mf_othermacro.sas
  @param [in] paramname Description
  @param [out] outparam Description
  <h4> Related Macros </h4>
  @li mp_related.sas
  @version 9.4
  @author Your Name
**/
```

## Folder / prefix conventions

| Folder | Prefix | Platform |
|---|---|---|
| `base/` | `mf_` (function-style), `mp_` (procedure-style) | All platforms |
| `meta/` | `mm_` | SAS 9 metadata |
| `metax/` | `mmx_` | SAS 9 metadata (OS command dependent) |
| `viya/` | `mv_` | Viya |
| `server/` | `ms_` | SASjs server |
| `xplatform/` | `mx_` | Runtime platform detection |
| `fcmp/`, `lua/`, `ddl/` | - | PROC FCMP functions, LUA wrappers, DDL |

Use `mf_` macros when the macro returns a value usable in an expression; use `mp_` for procedural macros that generate code/statements.

**Cross-suite rule:** `mp_` macros must never reference `mx_` macros. Platform dispatching (SAS 9 / Viya / SASjs server) belongs in the `mx_` suite, which delegates to `ms_`/`mv_`/PROC STP per platform. If an `mp_` macro seems to need platform-specific behaviour, the macro itself belongs in `xplatform/` as an `mx_` macro instead.
