## What it does

A SAS package is one zip holding macros, functions and data steps, together with generated description, load, unload and help files. The SAS Packages Framework (SPF) pulls such zips from a folder, so you can pin a version and swap packages without touching `SASAUTOS` or a macro catalogue. The skill covers the consumer side of the framework and is not tied to SASjs — packages can come from any author.

The skill spells out the fileref rules and the four macros: `%installPackage`, `%helpPackage`, `%loadPackage`, `%unloadPackage`. The fileref has to be called `packages` and has to point at a directory that already exists, not at a zip. Use `%sysfunc(pathname(work))` for a throwaway session, or a permanent directory if you want the install to survive. Versions go in parentheses: `%installPackage(baseplus(1.17))`.

There is a section on the traps. A return code of `rc=20006` means the install failed even though the line reads like a success message, and the usual cause is a missing packages folder. On Linux the documented `C:/SAS_PACKAGES` example turns into a relative path, so the install breaks. Network egress is needed from the SAS session itself, not from your workstation. The skill runs nothing — you submit the code examples to SAS yourself.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sasjs/skills --skill sas-packages -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/sas-packages/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/sas-packages/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sasjs/skills --skill sas-packages -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/sas-packages/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sasjs/skills --skill sas-packages -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/sas-packages/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install sasjs/skills sas-packages
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/sas-packages/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sasjs/skills --skill sas-packages -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/sasjs/skills --path sas-packages
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/sas-packages/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sasjs/skills --skill sas-packages -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/sasjs/skills/tree/HEAD/sas-packages/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- install a package such as `sasjscore` into a SAS session
- work out why `%installPackage` returned `rc=20006`
- set up a packages folder and the `packages` fileref
- load macros for one job without touching a server's `SASAUTOS`
- pin a package version during install

## Example prompts
- Walk me through installing `sasjscore` with SPF and confirm the macros are live
- The install failed with `rc=20006` — find the cause and fix it
- How do I load the macros for one session and unload them afterwards?

# SAS Packages (SPF)

<!-- SPDX-License-Identifier: MIT -->

A **SAS package** is a single zip holding a group of SAS programs (macros, functions, data steps) plus automatically generated description, load, unload and help files. The **SAS Packages Framework** (SPF, by Bartosz Jablonski) installs and loads them from a folder of zips, so a package can be pinned, versioned and swapped without touching `SASAUTOS` or a macro catalogue.

This skill covers using the framework as a consumer. It is not SASjs-specific - SPF is an independent project, and the packages it serves come from any author.

## When to use

- Installing a package into a SAS session, e.g. `sasjscore` (the SASPAC packaging of @sasjs/core)
- Debugging `%installPackage` / `%helpPackage` / `%loadPackage` failures
- Setting up a packages folder, or working out which path to point the `packages` fileref at
- Loading macros for one job without adding them to a shared server's `SASAUTOS`

Don't use for: authoring or publishing a package (`%generatePackage`), or for @sasjs/core's own macro coding standards - see the `sasjs-core` skill for those.

## Enabling the framework

The framework is a single file. Enable it in the session:

```sas
filename packages "%sysfunc(pathname(work))";
filename SPFinit url "https://bit.ly/SPFinit";
%include SPFinit;
```

The raw URL `https://raw.githubusercontent.com/yabwon/SAS_PACKAGES/main/SPF/SPFinit.sas` is the same file without the shortener, and is a better choice where a redirect is unwanted. Enabling the framework needs internet access from the SAS session; it is a one-off per session unless the file is kept on disk (see Persistence below).

## The packages fileref (mandatory)

- The fileref **must** be named `packages`. `packages` and `package` are reserved keywords in SPF; a different name is not picked up.
- It points at a **directory**, not a zip file.
- **The directory must already exist.** SPF does not create it - `%installPackage` is documented as equivalent to manually downloading the zip into that folder, and it will not make the folder for you.
