# sanity-best-practices

Sanity's own rules for an AI agent working on a Sanity codebase: schemas, GROQ, TypeGen, visual editing, migrations and framework wiring. Useful the moment the agent touches your content layer.

## What it does

Sanity maintains this skill in the `sanity-io/agent-toolkit` repo. It ships reference files under `references/`, one per concern: GROQ, schema design, TypeGen, visual editing, Portable Text, images, migrations, Sanity Functions, Blueprints. There are framework guides too, for Next.js, Nuxt, Astro, Remix, SvelteKit, Angular, Hydrogen, the App SDK, and apps running in the Dashboard via `defineApplication`. The agent opens the one or two files that match the job instead of loading everything.

Some rules are not up for debate. Ordinary documents get their `_id` from Sanity, since hand-built UUIDs or slug-derived IDs break links later. Relationships go through `reference` fields and come back in GROQ lookups. An explicit ID is for singletons that Studio Structure controls, localized ones like `homePage-en` included.

Video is the sharp edge here. Anything stored as a `file` asset is handed over as a plain download, no transcoding and no adaptive streaming, so traffic and the bill climb. Sanity Media Library streams through Mux, but it needs an Enterprise plan with the video add-on; the field comes from `defineVideoField()` in `sanity/media-library`. On other plans you install `sanity-plugin-mux-input` or keep an embed URL from YouTube or Vimeo. If the project already has video, check the plan before anything else.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sanity-io/agent-toolkit --skill sanity-best-practices -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/sanity-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/sanity-best-practices/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sanity-io/agent-toolkit --skill sanity-best-practices -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/sanity-best-practices/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sanity-io/agent-toolkit --skill sanity-best-practices -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/sanity-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install sanity-io/agent-toolkit sanity-best-practices
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/sanity-best-practices/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sanity-io/agent-toolkit --skill sanity-best-practices -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/sanity-io/agent-toolkit --path skills/sanity-best-practices
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/sanity-best-practices/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add sanity-io/agent-toolkit --skill sanity-best-practices -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/sanity-io/agent-toolkit/tree/HEAD/skills/sanity-best-practices/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- design a content schema with validation and clean `_id` handling
- write a GROQ query that resolves `reference` fields
- wire a Sanity Studio into a Next.js App Router app
- generate types with TypeGen so queries match the schema
- import legacy HTML as Portable Text

## Example prompts
- Review the `post` schema in `schemas/` and switch the author link to a `reference` field resolved in GROQ.
- Set up TypeGen for the Next.js app and fix the query types in `lib/queries.ts`.
- Add a Presentation preview with visual editing for the product page.

# Sanity Best Practices

Comprehensive best practices and integration guides for Sanity development, maintained by Sanity. Use the quick reference below to load only the one or two topic files that match the task.

## When to Apply

Reference these guidelines when:
- Setting up a new Sanity project or onboarding
- Integrating Sanity with a frontend framework (Next.js, Nuxt, Astro, Remix, SvelteKit, Hydrogen)
- Writing GROQ queries or optimizing performance
- Designing content schemas
- Implementing Visual Editing and live preview
- Working with images, Portable Text, or page builders
- Configuring Sanity Studio structure
- Setting up TypeGen for type safety
- Implementing localization
- Migrating content from other systems
- Building custom apps with the Sanity App SDK
- Developing or deploying a Studio or app in the Sanity Dashboard
- Managing infrastructure with Blueprints
- Automating content workflows with Sanity Functions or webhooks

## Global Rules

- Let Sanity generate `_id` values for ordinary documents. Do not create deterministic UUIDs, slug-derived IDs, or legacy-system IDs when creating documents.
- Model relationships with `reference` fields, then resolve related documents with GROQ lookups, source-key fields, or returned `_id` values from created documents.
