## What it does

This skill instructs the agent on selecting runtime sanitizers for C and C++ projects. It covers compiler flags for GCC and Clang across AddressSanitizer, UndefinedBehaviorSanitizer, ThreadSanitizer, MemorySanitizer, and LeakSanitizer. The instructions detail how to read raw crash logs, match allocation frames to invalid memory reads, and pinpoint off-by-one errors.

Configuration snippets cover CMake targets and GitHub Actions test jobs. They set runtime flags such as `abort_on_error=1` via `ASAN_OPTIONS` or `-fno-sanitize-recover=all` to break CI pipelines on the first detected fault. It also shows syntax for `.supp` files to ignore known leak signatures.

Tool combinations have strict boundaries. TSan cannot run alongside ASan or MSan in the same binary. MSan requires Clang and demands fully instrumented dependencies, or it triggers false alarms on every uninstrumented library read.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill sanitizers -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/sanitizers/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/sanitizers/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill sanitizers -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/sanitizers/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill sanitizers -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/sanitizers/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills sanitizers
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/sanitizers/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill sanitizers -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --path skills/runtimes/sanitizers
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/sanitizers/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill sanitizers -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- select the right sanitizer for a memory defect or concurrency bug
- configure GCC and Clang build flags for ASan and UBSan runs
- decode crash logs for buffer overflows and use-after-free errors
- build suppression files for false positives in LSan and UBSan
- wire runtime sanitizers into CMake builds and GitHub Actions workflows

## Example prompts
- Which compiler flags do I need to combine ASan with integer overflow checks in GCC?
- Help me decode this ASan heap-buffer-overflow crash log and locate the out-of-bounds access.
- Write a LeakSanitizer suppression rule for memory leaks coming from OpenSSL initialization.

description: Compiler sanitizer skill for runtime bug detection in C/C++. Use when enabling and interpreting AddressSanitizer (ASan), UndefinedBehaviorSanitizer (UBSan), ThreadSanitizer (TSan), MemorySanitizer (MSan), or LeakSanitizer (LSan) with GCC or Clang. Activates on queries about sanitizer flags, sanitizer reports, ASAN_OPTIONS, memory errors, data races, undefined behaviour, uninitialised reads, or choosing which sanitizer to use for a given bug class.

# Sanitizers

## Purpose

Guide agents through choosing, enabling, and interpreting compiler runtime sanitizers for finding memory errors, undefined behaviour, data races, and memory leaks.

## Triggers

- "My program has a memory error — which sanitizer do I use?"
- "How do I enable ASan?"
- "How do I interpret an ASan/UBSan/TSan report?"
- "ASan says heap-buffer-overflow — what does that mean?"
- "How do I suppress false positives in sanitizers?"
- "Can I use sanitizers in CI?"

## Workflow

### 1. Decision tree: which sanitizer?

```bash
Bug class?
├── Memory OOB, use-after-free, double-free → AddressSanitizer (ASan)
├── Stack OOB, global OOB → ASan (all three covered)
├── Uninitialised reads → MemorySanitizer (MSan, Clang only, requires all-clang build)
├── Undefined behaviour (int overflow, null deref, bad cast) → UBSan
├── Data races (multi-thread) → ThreadSanitizer (TSan)
├── Memory leaks only → LeakSanitizer (LSan, standalone or via ASan)
└── Multiple classes → ASan + UBSan (common combo); cannot combine with TSan or MSan
```

### 2. AddressSanitizer (ASan)

```bash
# GCC or Clang
gcc -fsanitize=address -fno-omit-frame-pointer -g -O1 -o prog main.c
# Or
clang -fsanitize=address -fno-omit-frame-pointer -g -O1 -o prog main.c
```

Runtime options (via `ASAN_OPTIONS`):

```bash
ASAN_OPTIONS=detect_leaks=1:abort_on_error=1:log_path=/tmp/asan.log ./prog
```

| `ASAN_OPTIONS` key | Effect |
|--------------------|--------|
| `detect_leaks=0/1` | Enable LeakSanitizer (default 1 on Linux) |
| `abort_on_error=1` | Call `abort()` instead of `_exit()` (for core dumps) |
| `log_path=path` | Write report to file |
| `symbolize=1` | Symbolize addresses (needs `llvm-symbolizer` in PATH) |
| `fast_unwind_on_malloc=0` | More accurate stacks (slower) |
| `quarantine_size_mb=256` | Delay reuse of freed memory |

**Interpreting ASan output:**

```text
==12345==ERROR: AddressSanitizer: heap-buffer-overflow on address 0x602000000050
READ of size 4 at 0x602000000050 thread T0
    #0 0x401234 in foo /home/user/src/main.c:15
