## What it does

The skill covers three jobs: auditing an existing interface, designing new components, and improving what is already there. It works in three layers. TailwindCSS handles styling and design tokens, Radix UI supplies accessible behaviour with no styling attached, and shadcn/ui combines both into ready components whose code lives in your repo.

An audit looks at component composition, WCAG 2.1/2.2 accessibility, responsive behaviour, token usage and React code quality. Design work covers atomic design, component variants, a three-tier token system and colour in OKLCH. Dark mode runs on CSS variables.

Setup follows a fixed order: TailwindCSS first, then the shadcn/ui CLI, which pulls in the Radix dependencies, then the components you actually need, theme configuration and a dark mode toggle. One thing to know: the skill tells you to enhance Radix accessibility rather than override it. If your team patches ARIA attributes on top of the primitives by hand, expect the review to push back.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samhvw8/dot-claude --skill ui-design-system -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ui-design-system/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ui-design-system/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samhvw8/dot-claude --skill ui-design-system -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ui-design-system/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samhvw8/dot-claude --skill ui-design-system -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ui-design-system/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install samhvw8/dot-claude ui-design-system
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ui-design-system/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samhvw8/dot-claude --skill ui-design-system -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/samhvw8/dot-claude --path skills/ui-design-system
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ui-design-system/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add samhvw8/dot-claude --skill ui-design-system -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/samhvw8/dot-claude/tree/HEAD/skills/ui-design-system/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- audit existing components and spot duplicates
- build an accessible dropdown with keyboard navigation
- set up dark mode with CSS variables
- move repeated styles into design tokens
- check responsive behaviour across breakpoints

## Example prompts
- Review the components in `components/ui` and flag accessibility problems
- Design a card component with variants using shadcn/ui and Tailwind
- Add dark mode: theme provider, toggle and variables in the Tailwind config

# UI/UX Design & Development Expert

**Comprehensive UI/UX design, review, and improvement for modern web applications.**

Production-ready implementations with **TailwindCSS + Radix UI + shadcn/ui** and modern React patterns.

## Stack Architecture

### The Three Pillars

**Layer 1: TailwindCSS (Styling Foundation)**
- Utility-first CSS framework with build-time generation
- Zero runtime overhead, minimal production bundles
- Design tokens: colors, spacing, typography, breakpoints
- Responsive utilities and dark mode support

**Layer 2: Radix UI (Behavior & Accessibility)**
- Unstyled, accessible component primitives
- WAI-ARIA compliant with keyboard navigation
- Focus management and screen reader support
- Unopinionated - full styling control

**Layer 3: shadcn/ui (Beautiful Components)**
- Pre-built components = Radix primitives + Tailwind styling
- Copy-paste distribution (you own the code)
- Built-in React Hook Form + Zod validation
- Customizable variants with type safety

### Architecture Hierarchy

```
Application Layer
    ↓
shadcn/ui Components (Beautiful defaults, ready-to-use)
    ↓
Radix UI Primitives (Accessible behavior, unstyled)
    ↓
TailwindCSS Utilities (Design system, styling)
```

**Key Principle:** Each layer enhances the one below. Start with Tailwind for styling, add Radix for accessible behavior, use shadcn/ui for complete components.

## Core Capabilities

### UI/UX Review & Audit
Systematic evaluation of existing interfaces:
- **Component Architecture Review:** Analyze component composition, reusability, and single responsibility
- **Accessibility Audit:** WCAG 2.1/2.2 AA/AAA compliance, keyboard navigation, screen reader support
- **Performance Analysis:** Core Web Vitals (LCP, FID, CLS), bundle size, render performance
- **Responsive Design Review:** Mobile-first implementation, breakpoint usage, container queries
