# salience-splitter

Splits an always-loaded context file into a thin resident layer and an on-demand layer. Useful once a SKILL.md or CLAUDE.md has grown past the point of being readable.

## What it does

The skill handles three kinds of asset: `SKILL.md`, `CLAUDE.md` and a memory index. In each case the resident layer keeps what every invocation needs — triggers, principles, step names, decision tables — while bash scripts, format templates and edge-case notes move into a separate file that loads only when a specific step runs. Imperative pointers such as `> **Detail**: See …` keep the two layers connected.

The split criterion is timing, not size. Ask when the content has to sit in memory, and the layers fall out of that answer. Behavioral rules stay resident whatever their length: a rule that decides what counts as something belongs in front of the agent at all times. One test settles it — given `SKILL.md` alone, can a consumer agent spot the trigger, follow the full step sequence and make the key decisions?

One hard limit is worth knowing before you start. Cutting the resident layer is supposed to be measured with an ablation harness built on `scripts/ablation_calibrate.sh` and `scripts/probe_scope_check.sh`, and those scripts are deliberately left out of a consumer install. Without them the measurement is unavailable, so KEEP is the default and a cut is off the table. To run it against your own resident file, copy both scripts out of the hub repo and get the calibrator to exit 0 on your machine first.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrono-meta/forge-harness --skill salience-splitter -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/salience-splitter/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/salience-splitter/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrono-meta/forge-harness --skill salience-splitter -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/salience-splitter/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrono-meta/forge-harness --skill salience-splitter -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/salience-splitter/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install chrono-meta/forge-harness salience-splitter
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/salience-splitter/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrono-meta/forge-harness --skill salience-splitter -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/chrono-meta/forge-harness --path plugins/fh-meta/skills/salience-splitter
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/salience-splitter/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrono-meta/forge-harness --skill salience-splitter -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/chrono-meta/forge-harness/tree/HEAD/plugins/fh-meta/skills/salience-splitter/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- shrink a bloated `SKILL.md` without dropping triggers or decision tables
- move bash scripts and format templates out of the always-loaded layer
- split `CLAUDE.md` into short rules plus detail docs behind pointers
- archive cold and superseded entries out of a memory index
- check that an agent still recognises the trigger from `SKILL.md` alone

## Example prompts
- This `SKILL.md` has gotten too long — split it into a resident layer and an on-demand layer.
- Move the templates and bash scripts out of `CLAUDE.md` and leave pointers to the detail docs.
- Clean up the memory index: push the cold and closed entries into `MEMORY_archive.md`.

# salience-splitter — Governance-Semantic Context Split

> **Renamed from `skill-splitter` (2026-07-05).** Old-name references still route here. The rename reflects
> the generalized scope: the split criterion applies to **any always-loaded context asset** — a SKILL.md,
> a CLAUDE.md, or a memory index — not only skills. The label now names the substance (salience-tiering of
> always-loaded context), not one instance of it. Dogfood: applied to a memory index 2026-07-05.

> An always-loaded asset that holds everything in one layer is not simple — it is unscoped.
> The goal is a lean always-loaded layer + an on-demand layer, not one file and its appendix.

**Scope (all three share one criterion — salience: what must be in attention every load):**
- **SKILL.md** → always-loaded SKILL.md + on-demand `SKILL_detail.md`
- **CLAUDE.md** → lean rules + on-demand detail docs (imperative `> **Detail**: See …` pointers)
- **memory index** → hot `MEMORY.md` + on-demand `MEMORY_archive.md` (cold/closed/superseded entries)

## Trigger Phrases

| Phrase | Situation |
|---|---|
| "this skill is getting too long", "trim the skill", "split this SKILL.md" | Direct split request |
| "context-doctor flagged this skill", "SKILL.md is bloated" | Post-diagnosis split |
| "I can't see the key parts", "too much detail in the skill file" | Readability problem |
| "separate the bash from the logic", "move the templates out" | Structural refactor request |
| `/salience-splitter` | Explicit invocation |
