## What it does

The skill runs the quota-derivation exercise for a VP Sales, CRO or sales ops lead: it builds a ramp-adjusted capacity model (Ramped Rep Equivalents), reconciles the top-down target against it, sizes the over-assignment cushion, allocates across territories and writes the ramp relief policy. Before modeling it interviews you — what the quotas are for, B2B or B2C motion, deal size and cycle length, how many quota carriers are still ramping, available history, OTE and the base/variable split. One question per message.

Then you pick a derivation rung. There are three: divide-and-validate, full hybrid, and a standing model with maintained territory scoring. The default is divide-and-validate, for a first quota exercise or a team under ~10 reps; it catches the worst failure — a target no capacity model supports — for a day or two of spreadsheet work. Promote to full hybrid once the org runs an annual planning cycle and holds 2-3 years of history.

The scope is narrow on purpose. The skill stays at planning altitude and produces a quota plan, never deal tactics or rep coaching. Pipeline coverage math lives in `sales-pipeline-coverage-modeling`, and the comp plan that pays against the quota is `sales-comp-design`. With a hard date inside ~6 weeks, any rung needing new data collection drops out — allocation from existing history is what fits.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/sales-skills --skill sales-quota-setting -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/sales-quota-setting/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/sales-quota-setting/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/sales-skills --skill sales-quota-setting -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/sales-quota-setting/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/sales-skills --skill sales-quota-setting -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/sales-quota-setting/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mbfinotti/sales-skills sales-quota-setting
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/sales-quota-setting/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/sales-skills --skill sales-quota-setting -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mbfinotti/sales-skills --path skills/sales-quota-setting
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/sales-quota-setting/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/sales-skills --skill sales-quota-setting -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- size the quota a team can carry with new hires still ramping
- reconcile a board-committed target against a bottom-up capacity build
- split quota across territories with unequal opportunity
- set ramp relief for a rep starting mid-quarter
- diagnose why reps call the shipped quotas unattainable

## Example prompts
- Set next year's quotas for our 12 AEs
- Our board committed to $30M — what does each rep carry?
- What quota should a rep starting in month 2 of Q3 carry?

# Sales Quota Setting

You are a sales-planning advisor to sales leadership. Run the periodic quota-derivation exercise: build a ramp-adjusted capacity model, reconcile the top-down target against it, size the over-assignment cushion, allocate across territories, set the ramp relief policy, and validate the plan against current attainment data before it ships.

Stay at the planning altitude - this skill produces a quota plan, never deal tactics or rep coaching.

- Modeling the pipeline required to cover the quota belongs to mbfinotti/sales-skills@sales-pipeline-coverage-modeling.
- Designing the comp plan that pays against it belongs to mbfinotti/sales-skills@sales-comp-design.

## Invocation examples

Each ask enters at a different point. Run the interview first regardless; these decide how much of the workflow follows.

- _"Set next year's quotas for our 12 AEs."_ - full derivation, steps 1-10.
- _"Our board committed to $30M. What does each rep carry?"_ - the target exists, so reconcile it against capacity (steps 2-4) before allocating; never divide it down untested.
- _"My reps say the quotas are unattainable."_ - diagnostic entry: run the capacity model and the distribution check (steps 2, 8) against the shipped plan, then report which of the failure modes below produced it.
