# sales-objection-handling

Works out what a sales objection actually means and writes lines a rep can say out loud. If the objection is a real constraint, it says to walk away.

## What it does

The skill interviews you first: what you sell, to whom, where the objection landed, the prospect's exact words, what you already tried. One question per message, often with multiple-choice answers, because you may be replying from a phone between calls. Then comes a prevention check. If you pitched before you understood the problem, the skill says so and points you to `mbfinotti/sales-skills@sales-discovery-questions`.

Diagnosis comes before any script. An objection can be a reflex brush-off, a smokescreen, a true concern, indecision, or a constraint no wording can move. Each one gets a different response mode. Price objections follow their own sequence: value gap versus a genuine budget limit, and trading instead of discounting. For competitor objections the skill advises checking the competitor's public pricing and packaging before writing a comparison; without web access, every competitor claim gets marked to verify first.

You need web access for those competitor checks, otherwise the comparisons stay unverified. Draft lines go through a humanizer skill, since this is language meant to be spoken. No humanizer available? Read each line aloud and cut what a person would not say on a call. A compliance gate covers regulated categories: securities, insurance, lending, health and pharma, energy. Discount trade planning and ROI math are out of scope — separate skills handle those.

```
2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/sales-objection-handling/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/sales-objection-handling/
### Codex
1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/sales-skills --skill sales-objection-handling -a codex
```
2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/sales-objection-handling/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/
### Cursor
1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/sales-skills --skill sales-objection-handling -a cursor
```
2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/sales-objection-handling/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/
### GitHub Copilot
1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mbfinotti/sales-skills sales-objection-handling
```
2. **Manually: put the files in place**
## When to use it
- figure out what "too expensive" really means
- write a rebuttal a rep can actually say on a call
- tell indecision apart from a true objection
- decide when a deal should be disqualified
- prepare an answer to "we already use a competitor"
## Example prompts
- The prospect said "that's a lot of money" at proposal stage. What's behind it and what do I say?
- Diagnose this objection: "send me some info", cold call, first 30 seconds
- Build a reusable objection library for my team around price pushback
description: Diagnoses what a sales objection really means and writes rebuttal scripts a rep can say out loud, or calls the deal dead when the objection is a real constraint. Covers price/budget, timing, competitor/incumbent, authority, status-quo, and trust objections for B2B and B2C, with price-specific guidance on value gap vs genuine budget limit and trading instead of discounting. Use whenever the user mentions a price objection, "too expensive", "not interested", "send me some info", "we already use a competitor", stalling, or an objection library, even without the word objection. Do NOT use for discount trade planning (mbfinotti/sales-skills@negotiation-concession-planner) or ROI math (mbfinotti/sales-skills@deal-value-calc).
# Objection Handling
Diagnose what a sales objection really means, then produce spoken-language response scripts - or say plainly that the deal should be disqualified. Works for B2B and B2C, from cold call through negotiation, with dedicated price-objection sequencing.
## The prevention check (run it first)
The strongest research in this field (Neil Rackham's Huthwaite studies) found that objections are more often created by the seller than the buyer, and that preventing them beats rebutting them. Pitching before the need is developed, or leading with features, manufactures price sensitivity.
1. Once the interview tells you where the objection landed, ask what discovery happened before it.
2. If the honest answer is "we pitched before we understood the problem", say so, and recommend mbfinotti/sales-skills@sales-discovery-questions to fix the upstream gap.
3. Then continue - the rep still has to answer the objection in front of them. One check; don't turn this into a discovery session.
## Interview
Ask one question per message. Offer multiple-choice options wherever possible - the user is often answering from a phone between calls. Gather:
1. What are you selling, and to whom? (product, rough price point, buyer persona)
```
