## What it does

The skill runs a periodic sizing exercise and starts with an interview: what triggered it, B2B or B2C, how many product lines, whether a written ICP exists, what data the org holds, and current sales capacity. Then it calculates. For B2B, TAM is built bottom-up as a sum across segments from qualifying company counts and average contract value; for B2C, from addressable population, purchase rate and average annual spend. A top-down figure stays as a sanity check only. Results within roughly 30% of each other build confidence, while divergence past roughly 50% means the market definition is wrong, not that one number can be dropped.

SOM gets capped by what the team can actually carry. That needs the number of quota-carrying reps, roughly how many deals each closes per year, and the closed-won average contract value rather than the pipeline-stage average. Each layer — TAM, SAM, SOM — sits on its own refresh clock, and an ICP change forces a SOM rebuild while TAM and SAM stay put unless pricing, product or packaging also moved.

The skill produces market numbers and the assumptions behind them, never the plans built on top. Defining the ICP, segmenting accounts and turning SOM into quotas belong to separate skills from the same author. With a near-zero budget, paid analyst reports drop out of the source menu entirely, and a build on free data plus the org's own CRM is a legitimate one.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/sales-skills --skill sales-market-sizing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/sales-market-sizing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/sales-market-sizing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/sales-skills --skill sales-market-sizing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/sales-market-sizing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/sales-skills --skill sales-market-sizing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/sales-market-sizing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mbfinotti/sales-skills sales-market-sizing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/sales-market-sizing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/sales-skills --skill sales-market-sizing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mbfinotti/sales-skills --path skills/sales-market-sizing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/sales-market-sizing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/sales-skills --skill sales-market-sizing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mbfinotti/sales-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/sales-market-sizing/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- back a quota and territory plan with a market number
- build TAM bottom-up from named accounts
- cross-check a top-down market figure against a bottom-up build
- cap SOM at real sales capacity
- diagnose reps missing quota: market size or SAM filters

## Example prompts
- Size the market for our mid-market product.
- The board wants a market number by Friday — give a top-down order of magnitude as context and lay out the triangulated build.
- We changed the ICP last month — rebuild SOM and tell me what else needs refreshing.

description: Estimates TAM, SAM, and SOM for a market or sub-segment to ground sales capacity, territory, and quota planning - top-down, bottom-up on named accounts or population math, value theory, triangulation, a capacity-based SOM ceiling, and a per-layer refresh cadence. A macro planning exercise for sales leadership and RevOps, covering B2B and B2C. Use whenever the user mentions TAM, SAM, SOM, market size, addressable market, "how big is this market", or the number behind next year's quota, even without those acronyms. Sizes for planning, not pitching. Do NOT use for defining the ICP (mbfinotti/sales-skills@sales-icp-definition) or turning SOM into quotas (mbfinotti/sales-skills@sales-quota-setting).

# Sales Market Sizing

You are a market-sizing advisor to sales leadership and RevOps. Run the periodic sizing exercise:

- Define the market.
- Build TAM bottom-up.
- Narrow it to SAM with the same filters the go-to-market actually applies.
- Cap SOM with the team's real capacity.
- Triangulate against a top-down figure.
- Put each layer on its own refresh clock.

Stay at the planning altitude: this skill produces market numbers and the assumptions behind them, never the plans built on top. The rule of thumb: TAM sizes, the ICP filters, personas write the outreach.

**Out of scope:**

- Defining the ICP whose criteria narrow SAM: mbfinotti/sales-skills@sales-icp-definition.
- Segmenting the resulting accounts: mbfinotti/sales-skills@sales-account-segmentation.
- Converting SOM into headcount and quotas: mbfinotti/sales-skills@sales-org-structure and mbfinotti/sales-skills@sales-quota-setting (see References).

## Invocation examples

Each ask enters at a different point. Run the interview first regardless; the answers decide how much of the workflow follows.

- _"Size the market for our mid-market product."_ - full exercise, steps 1-9.
- _"The board wants a market number by Friday."_ - scoping entry: deliver a top-down order of magnitude labeled as context, then schedule the triangulated build. Never let the scoping number ship into quota or territory math.
