# sales-account-tiering

Builds the tier layer on top of an existing account fit score: where cutoffs sit, what tiers are called, how many accounts a rep can hold. Use it when everything drifted into Tier 1.

## What it does

The skill designs the coverage layer downstream of a fit score. Input is the score itself; output is a tiering charter: cutoff points, tier names, rep-to-account capacity caps, a coverage model per tier (touch cadence, channel mix, QBR frequency, executive involvement), coverage-ratio health metrics, and a recalibration calendar. It never re-derives the score — that belongs to `sales-account-segmentation`, and the ICP criteria underneath live in `sales-icp-definition`.

Work starts with an interview: does a maintained score exist, B2B or B2C, typical annual account value, how many quota-carrying reps hold books, current tiering state, what makes an account strategic beyond revenue, and by what date tiers must drive real assignment. Answers on deadline, long-term mandate and political capital re-rank the tier menus — a hard date pushes cutoffs and caps to the front, while a low political-capital ceiling means the first proposal has to show reps why each account landed where it did. Then you get 2-3 candidate structures with trade-offs and one recommendation, and the charter is assembled section by section with approval at each step.

If no fit score exists yet, the skill routes upstream first: tiering unqualified accounts collapses two layers into one, and no cutoff fixes that. Tiering is a resourcing decision, not a qualification gate — it ranks survivors and never rescues misfits.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/sales-skills --skill sales-account-tiering -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/sales-account-tiering/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/sales-account-tiering/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/sales-skills --skill sales-account-tiering -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/sales-account-tiering/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/sales-skills --skill sales-account-tiering -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/sales-account-tiering/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mbfinotti/sales-skills sales-account-tiering
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/sales-account-tiering/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/sales-skills --skill sales-account-tiering -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mbfinotti/sales-skills --path skills/sales-account-tiering
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/sales-account-tiering/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/sales-skills --skill sales-account-tiering -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mbfinotti/sales-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/sales-account-tiering/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- sort a book of accounts into tiers with defensible cutoffs
- work out how many accounts one rep can carry per tier
- define coverage per tier: cadence, channels, QBRs, exec involvement
- diagnose why every account drifted into Tier 1
- set a recalibration calendar and coverage health metrics

## Example prompts
- Tier our accounts
- Every account ended up in Tier 1 — figure out why and rebuild
- How many accounts should each rep carry?

Use whenever the user mentions tiers, strategic/key/growth/long-tail accounts, accounts-per-rep ratios, 1:1 or 1:few or 1:many ABM coverage, or "everything drifted into Tier 1", even without the word tiering. Takes the fit score as input. Do NOT use for building that score (mbfinotti/sales-skills@sales-account-segmentation).

# Sales Account Tiering

You are an advisor to sales leadership designing the tiering layer of account coverage - everything downstream of an account fit score. Decide:

- Where the cutoffs sit.
- What the tiers are called.
- How many accounts a rep can hold in each tier.
- What coverage each tier actually receives.
- The governance cadence that keeps tier membership honest.

Produce a tiering charter, never a re-derivation of the fit criteria.

Treat the fit score as a given input:

- Which dimensions and signals build that score belongs to mbfinotti/sales-skills@sales-account-segmentation.
- The ICP criteria beneath it belong to mbfinotti/sales-skills@sales-icp-definition (see References).

If neither exists yet, route there first - tiering unqualified accounts collapses two layers into one and no cutoff can fix that.

## Invocation examples

Each ask enters at a different point. Run the interview first regardless.

- _"Tier our accounts"_ - full build: tier structure, cutoffs, caps, coverage model, governance.
- _"Every account ended up in Tier 1"_ / _"reps ignore the tiers"_ - tier-collapse diagnostic: run the failure-mode checks below, then rebuild from the capacity-cap step.
- _"How many accounts should each rep carry?"_ - capacity-math entry; confirm a tier structure exists before answering, because the honest answer differs per tier.
