# safe-browser

The skill builds a local browser agent whose only tool is safe_browser. Requests to hosts outside the allowlist fail at the CDP layer.

## What it does

The skill is a builder guide, not the runtime boundary itself. It walks you through generating a Claude Agent SDK app whose agent has exactly one browser capability: the `safe_browser` tool, which owns the Playwright/CDP session. Fetch interception is enabled for every request, so allowlisted hosts get `Fetch.continueRequest` and everything else gets `Fetch.failRequest`.

Instead of raw CDP, the tool exposes a fixed set of actions: `goto`, `extract_front_page`, `extract_comments`, `current_url` and `audit_log`. There is no `{ method, params }` passthrough, so the agent cannot call `Fetch.disable`, spin up new targets or reach for a shell. For the Hacker News demo the template uses purpose-built extractors rather than a broad page snapshot — easier to verify and harder to misuse.

You need Node.js 18+, npm and a local Chromium (`npx playwright install chromium`) before starting. The generated app reads `ANTHROPIC_API_KEY`. Local Chromium is the default; Browserbase remote mode only comes up if you ask for it. Scraped page text counts as untrusted input, so every browser action still goes through `safe_browser`.

## Requirements
- Works with: Playwright

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add browserbase/skills --skill safe-browser -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/safe-browser/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/safe-browser/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add browserbase/skills --skill safe-browser -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/safe-browser/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add browserbase/skills --skill safe-browser -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/safe-browser/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install browserbase/skills safe-browser
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/safe-browser/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add browserbase/skills --skill safe-browser -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/browserbase/skills --path skills/safe-browser
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/safe-browser/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add browserbase/skills --skill safe-browser -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/browserbase/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/safe-browser/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- build a browser agent that never leaves approved domains
- demo a blocked off-domain navigation
- write a scraper with a domain policy and an audit trail
- verify that Fetch interception returns `Fetch.failRequest`
- generate a safe browser client on the Claude Agent SDK

## Example prompts
- Build the safe-browser demo so the agent only reads news.ycombinator.com
- Run safe-browser and show the off-domain navigation getting blocked
- Generate a safe-browser scraper with an allowlist and audit log

# Safe Browser

Build a local browser-agent demo where the generated runtime agent has exactly one browser capability: `safe_browser`. The tool owns the Playwright/CDP session, enables `Fetch` interception for all requests, and fails any request whose host is not allowlisted.

This skill is a builder guide. The skill itself is not the runtime boundary; the generated Claude Agent SDK app is.

## When to Use

- The user asks for a browser agent that must stay on an allowlisted site.
- The user wants to demonstrate prompt-injection or link-following containment.
- The user asks to build a scraper or browser workflow with domain policy.
- The user asks for a Claude Agent SDK example first. Keep OpenAI Agents SDK variants out unless requested.

## Default Approach

Use the Claude Agent SDK local template:

```bash
cp -R skills/safe-browser/templates/claude-agent-sdk /tmp/safe-browser-demo
cd /tmp/safe-browser-demo
npm install
cp ~/Developer/scratchpad/.env .env 2>/dev/null || true
node hn-scraper-demo.mjs
```

To watch the local browser instead of running headless:

```bash
SAFE_BROWSER_HEADLESS=false node hn-scraper-demo.mjs
```

If Chromium is missing:

```bash
npx playwright install chromium
```

## Runtime Shape

```text
User task
  -> coding agent uses this skill to create a demo app
    -> Claude Agent SDK runtime agent
      -> only tool: safe_browser
        -> local Chromium
        -> CDP Fetch.enable({ urlPattern: "*" })
        -> allowlist decision
          -> Fetch.continueRequest for allowed hosts
          -> Fetch.failRequest for blocked hosts
```

## Tool Design Rules

Expose constrained actions, not raw CDP:

- `goto`: navigate to an absolute URL through `Page.navigate`.
- `extract_front_page`: return structured data for the Hacker News front page.
- `extract_comments`: return structured data for a Hacker News comments page.
- `current_url`: report the current page URL.
- `audit_log`: return CDP allow/block decisions.
