## What it does

The skill provides reference instructions for invoking the Rust compiler and tuning builds. It outlines `Cargo.toml` configurations for maximum execution speed or minimal binary footprint, including options like `codegen-units = 1`, Link-Time Optimization (`lto`), and `panic = "abort"`. It also covers persistent and one-off `RUSTFLAGS` configurations such as `-C target-cpu=native`.

It guides the agent through inspecting compiled outputs using `--emit=asm`, `--emit=mir`, and LLVM IR flags. To diagnose compile-time slowdowns and binary bloat from generic monomorphization, the guide details patterns with `dyn Trait` and helper crates like `cargo-llvm-lines`. Inspecting assembly directly through the recommended workflow requires installing the external `cargo-show-asm` crate beforehand.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill rustc-basics -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/rustc-basics/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/rustc-basics/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill rustc-basics -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/rustc-basics/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill rustc-basics -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/rustc-basics/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills rustc-basics
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/rustc-basics/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill rustc-basics -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --path skills/rust/rustc-basics
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/rustc-basics/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill rustc-basics -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- configure `Cargo.toml` release profiles and `RUSTFLAGS` for maximum execution speed
- shrink executable size using LTO, symbol stripping, and `panic = "abort"`
- inspect assembly or MIR intermediate representations for specific functions
- diagnose compile bloat from generic monomorphization using `cargo-llvm-lines`

## Example prompts
- Configure my Cargo.toml release profile for minimal binary size.
- How can I inspect the generated assembly for this function using cargo-show-asm?
- Show me how to reduce generic monomorphization bloat using an inner function pattern.

# rustc Basics

## Purpose

Guide agents through Rust compiler invocation: RUSTFLAGS, Cargo profile configuration, build modes, MIR and assembly inspection, monomorphization, and common compilation error patterns.

## Triggers

- "How do I configure a release build in Rust for maximum performance?"
- "How do I see the assembly output for a Rust function?"
- "What is monomorphization and why is it making my compile slow?"
- "How do I enable LTO in Rust?"
- "My Rust binary is too large — how do I shrink it?"
- "How do I read Rust MIR output?"

## Workflow

### 1. Choose a build mode

```bash
# Debug (default) — fast compile, no optimization, debug info
cargo build
# Release — optimized, no debug info by default
cargo build --release
# Check only (fastest, no codegen)
cargo check
# Build for specific target
cargo build --release --target aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu
```

### 2. Cargo.toml profile configuration

```toml
[profile.release]
opt-level = 3          # 0-3, "s" (size), "z" (aggressive size)
debug = false          # true = full, 1 = line tables only, 0 = none
lto = "thin"           # false | "thin" | true (fat LTO)
codegen-units = 1      # 1 = max optimization, higher = faster compile
panic = "abort"        # "unwind" (default) | "abort" (smaller binary)
strip = "symbols"      # "none" | "debuginfo" | "symbols"
overflow-checks = false # default true in debug, false in release
[profile.release-with-debug]
inherits = "release"
debug = true           # release build with debug symbols
strip = "none"
[profile.dev]
opt-level = 1          # Speed up debug builds slightly
```

| Setting | Impact |
|---------|--------|
| `lto = true` (fat) | Best optimization, slowest link |
| `lto = "thin"` | Good optimization, parallel link |
| `codegen-units = 1` | Best inlining, slower compile |
| `panic = "abort"` | Removes unwind tables, smaller binary |
| `opt-level = "z"` | Aggressive size reduction |

### 3. RUSTFLAGS

```bash
# Set for a single build
RUSTFLAGS="-C target-cpu=native" cargo build --release
# Enable all target CPU features
RUSTFLAGS="-C target-cpu=native -C target-feature=+avx2,+bmi2" cargo build --release
# Control codegen at invocation level
RUSTFLAGS="-C opt-level=3 -C codegen-units=1 -C lto=on" cargo build --release
```

Persistent in `.cargo/config.toml`:
```toml
[build]
````
