## What it does

The skill lays out six steps of Foreign Function Interface work. It starts with manual `extern "C"` declarations, then moves to bindgen with `allowlist_function`, `derive_debug` and `blocklist_type` for types that break codegen. After that comes the sys crate layout: a separate `mylib-sys` with `links = "mylib"` and a `build.rs` that probes `pkg-config` first and falls back to compiling a vendored source with `cc::Build`.

Safe wrappers and Rust-to-C export get their own sections. A wrapper hides the raw pointer behind a struct with `Drop`, implements `Send` and `Sync` where that holds, and turns C return codes into `Result`. Export uses `#[no_mangle]`, `extern "C"`, `Box::into_raw` and the matching `Box::from_raw` on destroy. cbindgen writes `include/mylib.h` from `build.rs`.

You need clang for the build: bindgen parses headers through `clang_arg`, so the binding step fails without it. Linking is covered for static and dynamic libraries, plus macOS frameworks such as CoreFoundation. A `references/bindgen-cbindgen.md` file holds the configuration details.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill rust-ffi -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/rust-ffi/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/rust-ffi/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill rust-ffi -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/rust-ffi/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill rust-ffi -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/rust-ffi/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills rust-ffi
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/rust-ffi/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill rust-ffi -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --path skills/rust/rust-ffi
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/rust-ffi/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill rust-ffi -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- call a C library function from Rust without rewriting headers by hand
- generate Rust bindings from `wrapper.h` with bindgen
- export Rust functions and produce a C header with cbindgen
- wrap an unsafe C API in a type that frees resources on drop
- set up a sys crate with `build.rs` and system library linking

## Example prompts
- Generate bindings for `wrapper.h` with bindgen in `build.rs`
- How do I wrap this C API in a safe type with `Drop`?
- Configure cbindgen to write the header to `include/mylib.h`

# Rust FFI

## Purpose

Guide agents through Rust's Foreign Function Interface: calling C from Rust with bindgen, exporting Rust to C with cbindgen, writing safe wrappers, linking libraries via `build.rs`, and structuring sys crates.

## Triggers

- "How do I call a C library from Rust?"
- "How do I use bindgen to generate Rust bindings?"
- "How do I export Rust functions to be called from C?"
- "How do I write a safe wrapper around an unsafe C API?"
- "How do I link a system library in Rust?"
- "What is a sys crate and how do I structure one?"

## Workflow

### 1. Calling C without bindgen (manual declarations)

```rust
// Declare external C functions manually
use std::ffi::{c_int, c_char, c_void, CStr, CString};
extern "C" {
    fn strlen(s: *const c_char) -> usize;
    fn malloc(size: usize) -> *mut c_void;
    fn free(ptr: *mut c_void);
    fn my_lib_init(config: *const c_char) -> c_int;
    fn my_lib_process(handle: *mut c_void, data: *const u8, len: usize) -> c_int;
    fn my_lib_cleanup(handle: *mut c_void);
}
// Call unsafe C function safely
fn init(config: &str) -> Result<*mut c_void, Error> {
    let c_config = CString::new(config)?;
    let result = unsafe { my_lib_init(c_config.as_ptr()) };
    if result != 0 {
        return Err(Error::InitFailed(result));
    }
    // return handle...
    todo!()
}
```

### 2. bindgen for automatic binding generation

```toml
# Cargo.toml
[build-dependencies]
bindgen = "0.70"
```

```rust
// build.rs
use std::path::PathBuf;
fn main() {
    println!("cargo:rerun-if-changed=wrapper.h");
    println!("cargo:rustc-link-lib=mylib");
    println!("cargo:rustc-link-search=/usr/local/lib");
    let bindings = bindgen::Builder::default()
        .header("wrapper.h")
        .clang_arg("-I/usr/local/include")
        .clang_arg("-DMYLIB_VERSION=2")
        // Only generate bindings for this library (not system headers)
        .allowlist_function("mylib_.*")
        .allowlist_type("MyLib.*")
        .allowlist_var("MYLIB_.*")
        // Derive common traits on structs
        .derive_debug(true)
        .derive_default(true)
        // Block problematic types
        .blocklist_type("__va_list_tag")
        .generate()
````
