## What it does

The skill takes your cash balance and produces three numbers: gross burn (average monthly expenses), monthly revenue, and net burn — the gap between them. Divide the balance by net burn and you get runway in months. It runs three scenarios: current, lean with expenses cut by 20%, and growth with expenses up 30%. Each one gets its own cash-out date.

With Wilson Tools connected, the skill pulls average expenses and income through `spending_summary` and checks whether burn is climbing via `transaction_search`, comparing the last 3 months against the prior 3. Without Wilson you export six months of transactions to CSV, pivot them by month, and follow the formulas the skill lays out. Both routes end in the same table.

Warning levels are blunt: 12 months or more is green, 6 to 12 is yellow, under 6 is red. When revenue beats expenses, the skill skips the runway figure and reports the business as profitable, showing monthly accumulation instead. The math assumes steady burn, so a one-off large payment will skew the result — use the 3-month average and keep an eye on the trend.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add openaccountant/skills --skill runway-calculator -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/runway-calculator/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/runway-calculator/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add openaccountant/skills --skill runway-calculator -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/runway-calculator/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add openaccountant/skills --skill runway-calculator -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/runway-calculator/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install openaccountant/skills runway-calculator
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**

gemini skills install https://github.com/openaccountant/skills --path business/runway-calculator
```
### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)
**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/runway-calculator/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works
### OpenCode
**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add openaccountant/skills --skill runway-calculator -a opencode
```
### Claude.ai
## When to use it
- find out how many months of cash you have left
- compare runway across current, lean and growth scenarios
- get the date your bank balance hits zero
- check whether your burn rate is climbing
- size post-raise runway after an investment
## Example prompts
- calculate my runway from my accounts
- how many months can I keep going at this burn rate?
- show me the lean scenario and the cash-out date
# Runway Calculator
## Overview
Determine how many months your business can operate at its current spending rate before running out of cash. Calculates gross burn, net burn, and runway under multiple scenarios (current, lean, growth).
## Wilson Tools Used
- `spending_summary` — calculate average monthly expenses (gross burn) and net burn (expenses minus revenue)
- `transaction_search` — determine current cash position from recent balance and identify trends in burn rate
## Workflow
1. Ask for the current cash balance (or identify from the most recent account balance).
2. Use `spending_summary` for the past 3-6 months to calculate:
   - Gross Burn = average monthly total expenses
   - Monthly Revenue = average monthly total income
   - Net Burn = Gross Burn - Monthly Revenue
3. Use `transaction_search` to check if burn is trending up or down (compare last 3 months vs prior 3 months).
4. Calculate runway under three scenarios:
```
RUNWAY ANALYSIS — as of [Date]
═══════════════════════════════════════════════
Current Cash Balance              $150,000

                    Current   Lean (-20%)   Growth (+30%)
───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Gross Burn/mo        $25,000     $20,000       $32,500
Monthly Revenue      $15,000     $15,000       $15,000
Net Burn/mo          $10,000      $5,000       $17,500
Runway (months)         15.0        30.0          8.6
Cash-Out Date        Jul 2027    Oct 2028      Jan 2027
═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════

Burn Trend: +8% over past 3 months ⚠
```
5. Runway = Cash Balance / Net Burn (monthly).
6. Cash-Out Date = Today + (Runway * 30 days).
7. Flag warning levels:
   - **Green**: 12+ months runway
   - **Yellow**: 6-12 months runway
   - **Red**: Under 6 months runway
8. If net burn is negative (revenue exceeds expenses), report as "Profitable — infinite runway" and show monthly cash accumulation instead.
## Without Wilson
1. Check your current bank balance across all business accounts.
2. Export the last 6 months of transactions as CSV.
3. In a spreadsheet, add a `Month` column: `=TEXT(Date,"YYYY-MM")`.
4. Pivot table: Rows = Month, Values = Sum of expenses (negative amounts), Sum of income (positive amounts).
