# runpod-usage

Explains how Runpod works: Pods versus Serverless, GPU and VRAM choices, image builds, storage and networking. Useful when you need to decide what to run before running anything.

## What it does

The skill runs nothing. It supplies background material so the agent can answer architecture questions and help you pick an approach before you act. Inside are reference files, one per question: first-run setup and auth, Pods versus serverless, the development loop, pod workflows, endpoint deployment, on-pod setup, Docker image builds, storage, GPU and CUDA selection, secrets, networking, common mistakes.

Next to them sit YAML concept files, one per concept: `pod.yaml`, `network-volume.yaml`, `machine.yaml` and others. Each holds fields, states, relations and rules, and every rule cites the public source it comes from. Where two sources disagree, the rule carries `conflict: true` and the skill gives both readings. You can find a concept with `grep` over `concepts/*.yaml`.

Execution happens elsewhere: infrastructure goes through `runpodctl` or `runpod-mcp`, your own code through `flash`, models, images and data through companion CLIs. Authoring a template project belongs to the separate `runpod-build-template` skill. One thing to watch: a stopped pod may not restart with a GPU, because a pod is bound to one machine — worth checking before you stop one.

## Requirements
- Works with: Docker

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add runpod/runpod-plugins-official --skill runpod-usage -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/runpod-usage/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/runpod-usage/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add runpod/runpod-plugins-official --skill runpod-usage -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/runpod-usage/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add runpod/runpod-plugins-official --skill runpod-usage -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/runpod-usage/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install runpod/runpod-plugins-official runpod-usage
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/runpod-usage/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add runpod/runpod-plugins-official --skill runpod-usage -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/runpod/runpod-plugins-official --path plugins/runpod/skills/runpod-usage
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/runpod-usage/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add runpod/runpod-plugins-official --skill runpod-usage -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/runpod/runpod-plugins-official/tree/HEAD/plugins/runpod/skills/runpod-usage/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pick between a pod and a serverless endpoint for a job
- estimate how much VRAM a model needs
- decide where data lives: container disk or network volume
- build a Docker image Runpod can actually run
- work out why a pod will not start again after stopping

## Example prompts
- Explain the difference between a pod and a serverless endpoint, and which one fits model inference
- How much VRAM does my model need, and which GPU should I pick on Runpod?
- Why won't my stopped pod restart on the same GPU?

# Runpod usage (concepts)

Background knowledge for making the right choice before you act. This skill runs
nothing — once you know what to do, execute with **runpod-mcp**/**runpodctl**
(infra), **flash** (your own code), or **companion-clis** (models/images/data).

**This skill explains; the golden paths demonstrate.** When the question is really "how do I
do X" rather than "how does X work", the verified end-to-end example is the faster answer —
[runpod/golden-paths/README.md](../runpod/golden-paths/README.md). Read the concept here, then
follow the path.

To author files for a custom template, use
[runpod-build-template](../runpod-build-template/SKILL.md); this lane supplies the
shared concepts, not a competing packaging workflow.

Read the one reference file that matches the question:

| Question | Read |
| --- | --- |
| First-run setup / auth — get + set `RUNPOD_API_KEY`, SSH, companion creds | `reference/getting-started.md` |
| Pods vs serverless, workers, cold starts, FlashBoot, queue vs load-balanced | `reference/concepts.md` |
| **The development loop for ANY workload (start here)** — plan → prefer prebuilt → provision → verify → teardown | `reference/development-loop.md` |
| **Stand up / iterate a workload on a pod** — the pod sub-loop | `reference/pod-workflows.md` |
| **Deploy / iterate a serverless endpoint** — Hub vs flash vs custom, invoke + verify | `reference/endpoint-workflows.md` |
| **Install software on a pod** — package hygiene, `uv`, non-interactive, caching | `reference/on-pod-setup.md` |
| Build a Docker image Runpod can run (handler contract, Dockerfile, `--platform=linux/amd64`) | `reference/docker.md` |
