## What it does

The skill takes an application request, local code or a GitHub URL and produces a finished Runpod template project. It runs in two modes: create from scratch, or improve what you already have. It inspects the source first and works out input → operation → output, the real entrypoint, dependencies, hardware, models and storage. A UI repo does not automatically define a queue job, so it will ask what one submitted job should do when no useful interface is specified.

Then it picks a target. Pod for interactive work, training or batch runs; Queue Serverless for jobs submitted through Runpod's queue; Load-balanced Serverless when the app's HTTP routes are called directly. One target is generated unless you ask for variants. Authoring source files needs neither Docker nor cloud credentials — building the image and registering the template are separate steps with their own access requirements.

You get a documented `Dockerfile`, `.dockerignore`, dependency and startup files, a README, and a reproducible real-workload check. Runpod settings come with exact ports, mounts, environment and secret names. A successful image build is not workload success, so checks are labelled passed, failed or unverified. It does not invent a universal `runpod.yaml`.

## Requirements
- Works with: GitHub

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add runpod/runpod-plugins-official --skill runpod-build-template -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/runpod-build-template/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/runpod-build-template/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add runpod/runpod-plugins-official --skill runpod-build-template -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/runpod-build-template/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add runpod/runpod-plugins-official --skill runpod-build-template -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/runpod-build-template/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install runpod/runpod-plugins-official runpod-build-template
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/runpod-build-template/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add runpod/runpod-plugins-official --skill runpod-build-template -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/runpod/runpod-plugins-official --path plugins/runpod/skills/runpod-build-template
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/runpod-build-template/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add runpod/runpod-plugins-official --skill runpod-build-template -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/runpod/runpod-plugins-official/tree/HEAD/plugins/runpod/skills/runpod-build-template/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write a Dockerfile for a specific app without guessing the base image
- decide between Pod and the two Serverless modes before writing code
- produce template files together with a README and a real-workload check
- improve an existing template while keeping compatible behaviour
- hand off exact ports, mounts and secret names for deployment

## Example prompts
- build a Runpod template from my GitHub repo, the app should answer over HTTP
- improve the current template: stable restarts and lower memory use
- make a queue Serverless project where one job takes an image and returns a link

# Build a Runpod template project

Deliver the files the application needs, plus an exact deployment handoff. Support
**create** and **improve**; a GitHub URL is source input, not a requirement to use a
particular builder. Preserve the user's project conventions and requested behavior.

For a multi-step task, first match the [worked examples](../runpod/golden-paths/README.md),
especially [project authoring](../runpod/golden-paths/26-template-project/README.md).
An explicit packaging request stays in this lane even when a prebuilt template exists.
Registering an already-built image as a Runpod template uses the infrastructure lanes
through the [router](../runpod/SKILL.md), without authoring another Dockerfile.

## Choose the contract, then author

Inspect the source before asking the user to choose architecture. Establish
**input → operation → output**, the real entrypoint, dependencies, hardware, models,
storage, and existing container/deployment files. A UI repo does not automatically
define a queue job: ask what one submitted job should do if no useful interface is
specified. Read [project authoring](reference/project-authoring.md) for inspection
and the output contract.
