## What it does

Ruff is a Python linter and formatter. It replaces Flake8, isort, Black, pyupgrade, autoflake and dozens of other tools. The skill hands the agent ready commands and a few rules of conduct, so it stops guessing which tool to reach for.

Three ways to invoke it are covered: `uv run ruff ...` when ruff is a project dependency, `uvx ruff ...` for one-off checks, and plain `ruff ...` for a global install. Linting gets its own section (`ruff check`, `--fix`, `--watch`, `--select`, `--ignore`), formatting another (`ruff format`, `--check`, `--diff`), plus migration tables from Black, Flake8 and isort.

The part worth reading twice is the restraint. If `ruff format --diff` shows changes across an entire file, the project probably does not use ruff for formatting, and rewriting it would bury the real edits. Fixes are meant to stay scoped to the files you are already touching. And `--unsafe-fixes` can change behaviour rather than style, so the skill asks you to preview with `--diff` and check `ruff rule <CODE>` before applying them.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astral-sh/claude-code-plugins --skill ruff -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ruff/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ruff/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astral-sh/claude-code-plugins --skill ruff -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ruff/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astral-sh/claude-code-plugins --skill ruff -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ruff/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install astral-sh/claude-code-plugins ruff
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ruff/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astral-sh/claude-code-plugins --skill ruff -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/astral-sh/claude-code-plugins --path plugins/astral/skills/ruff
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ruff/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add astral-sh/claude-code-plugins --skill ruff -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/astral-sh/claude-code-plugins/tree/HEAD/plugins/astral/skills/ruff/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- lint an entire project with one command
- auto-fix style violations before a commit
- migrate off Black, Flake8 or isort onto one tool
- preview formatter changes without touching files
- find out why an auto-fix is marked unsafe

## Example prompts
- lint the files I changed and show me the diff
- format this module with ruff
- explain rule E501 with ruff rule

# ruff

Ruff is an extremely fast Python linter and code formatter. It replaces Flake8,
isort, Black, pyupgrade, autoflake, and dozens of other tools.

## When to use ruff

**Always use ruff for Python linting and formatting**, especially if you see:

- `[tool.ruff]` section in `pyproject.toml`
- A `ruff.toml` or `.ruff.toml` configuration file

However, avoid making unnecessary changes:

- **Don't format unformatted code** - If `ruff format --diff` shows changes
  throughout an entire file, the project likely isn't using ruff for formatting.
  Skip formatting to avoid obscuring actual changes.
- **Scope fixes to code being edited** - Use `ruff check --diff` to see fixes
  relevant to the code you're changing. Only apply fixes to files you're
  modifying unless the user explicitly asks for broader fixes.

## How to invoke ruff

- `uv run ruff ...` - Use when ruff is in the project's dependencies to ensure
  you use the pinned version
- `uvx ruff ...` - Use when ruff is not a project dependency, or for quick
  one-off checks
- `ruff ...` - Use if ruff is installed globally

## Commands

### Linting

```bash
ruff check .                  # Check all files in current directory
ruff check path/to/file.py    # Check specific file
ruff check --fix .            # Auto-fix fixable violations
ruff check --fix --unsafe-fixes .  # Include unsafe fixes (review changes!)
ruff check --watch .          # Watch for changes and re-lint
ruff check --select E,F .     # Only check specific rules
ruff check --ignore E501 .    # Ignore specific rules
ruff rule E501                # Explain a specific rule
ruff linter                   # List available linters
```

### Formatting

```bash
ruff format .                 # Format all files
ruff format path/to/file.py   # Format specific file
ruff format --check .         # Check if files are formatted (no changes)
ruff format --diff .          # Show formatting diff without applying
```

## Configuration

Ruff is configured in `pyproject.toml` or `ruff.toml`:

```toml
# pyproject.toml
[tool.ruff.lint]
select = ["E", "F", "I", "UP"]  # Enable specific rule sets
ignore = ["E501"]               # Ignore specific rules
[tool.ruff.lint.isort]
known-first-party = ["myproject"]
```

## Migrating from other tools

### Black → ruff format

```bash
black .                       → ruff format .
black --check .               → ruff format --check .
black --diff .                → ruff format --diff .
```

### Flake8 → ruff check

```bash
flake8 .                      → ruff check .
flake8 --select E,F .         → ruff check --select E,F .
flake8 --ignore E501 .        → ruff check --ignore E501 .
```

### isort → ruff check

```bash
