## What it does

This skill guides coordination between TanStack Router and TanStack Query. The router handles navigation and triggers data fetching, while Query controls caching and background updates. The primary pattern runs a loader query with `staleTime: 'static'` before rendering, while components read updates via `useSuspenseQuery`.

A key rule is setting `defaultPreloadStaleTime: 0` on the router. Without this adjustment, the router's 30-second preload cache overrides Query freshness rules. For server-side rendering, `QueryClient` must be instantiated inside the `createAppRouter` factory function. A module-level singleton causes cross-request data leaks. Dehydration and hydration can be managed manually or through `@tanstack/react-router-ssr-query`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add TanStack/router --skill router-query -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/router-query/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/router-query/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add TanStack/router --skill router-query -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/router-query/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add TanStack/router --skill router-query -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/router-query/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install TanStack/router router-query
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/router-query/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add TanStack/router --skill router-query -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/TanStack/router --path packages/react-router/skills/compositions/router-query
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/router-query/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add TanStack/router --skill router-query -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/TanStack/router/tree/HEAD/packages/react-router/skills/compositions/router-query/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pass `queryClient` through TanStack Router context
- prefetch data in route loaders using static queries
- isolate `QueryClient` per server request in SSR setups
- configure dehydration and streaming with `@tanstack/react-router-ssr-query`

## Example prompts
- Configure TanStack Router with QueryClient in the router context and defaultPreloadStaleTime set to 0.
- Set up a route loader with a static Query fetch and read it with useSuspenseQuery.
- Implement createAppRouter with per-request QueryClient isolation for SSR.

# TanStack Router + TanStack Query Integration

This skill requires familiarity with both TanStack Router and TanStack Query. Read `@tanstack/router-core#router-core` and [react-router](../../react-router/SKILL.md) first.

This skill covers coordinating TanStack Query as an external data cache with TanStack Router's loader system. The router acts as a **coordinator** — it triggers data fetching during navigation, while Query manages caching, background refetching, and data lifecycle.

> **CRITICAL**: Set `defaultPreloadStaleTime: 0` when using TanStack Query. Without this, Router's built-in preload cache (30s default) prevents Query from controlling data freshness.

> **CRITICAL**: For SSR, create `QueryClient` inside the `createRouter` factory function. A module-level singleton leaks data between server requests.

## Setup: QueryClient in Router Context

### Basic (Client-Only)

```tsx
// src/main.tsx
import { QueryClient, QueryClientProvider } from '@tanstack/react-query'
import {
  RouterProvider,
  createRouter,
  createRootRouteWithContext,
} from '@tanstack/react-router'
import { routeTree } from './routeTree.gen'
// Root route declares that router context includes queryClient
// (root route file creates it with createRootRouteWithContext — see below)
const queryClient = new QueryClient()
const router = createRouter({
  routeTree,
  defaultPreloadStaleTime: 0, // Let Query manage caching
  context: { queryClient },
  Wrap: ({ children }) => (
    <QueryClientProvider client={queryClient}>{children}</QueryClientProvider>
  ),
})
declare module '@tanstack/react-router' {
  interface Register {
    router: typeof router
  }
}
function App() {
  return <RouterProvider router={router} />
}
```

### Root Route with Context

```tsx
// src/routes/__root.tsx
import { createRootRouteWithContext, Outlet } from '@tanstack/react-router'
import type { QueryClient } from '@tanstack/react-query'
// Double parentheses: factory pattern
export const Route = createRootRouteWithContext<{
  queryClient: QueryClient
}>()({
  component: () => <Outlet />,
})
```

### SSR-Safe Setup

```tsx
// src/router.tsx
import { QueryClient, QueryClientProvider } from '@tanstack/react-query'
import { createRouter } from '@tanstack/react-router'
import { routeTree } from './routeTree.gen'
