# route53

A skill that points your coding agent at the right Amazon Route 53 procedure and walks it through the steps. Handy for records, traffic splitting or blocking bad domains.

## What it does

The skill acts as a router. It reads the task and opens one file under `references/`: a record in a public zone, weighted routing for canaries and A/B tests, cross-Region failover, health checks, DNS Firewall, Route 53 Profiles, VPC Resolver for hybrid networks and Outposts, Global Resolver. Each file stands alone, with its own decision tables, constraints and troubleshooting.

Commands run through the AWS MCP server when one is connected, which gives sandboxing and an audit trail. Otherwise the agent falls back to the AWS CLI. Route 53 Domains API calls always go to `us-east-1` no matter where you work. CloudFront setup lives in a separate `route53-cloudfront` skill, so this one keeps to DNS.

Security rules in the skill are strict. Use IAM roles for credentials, read-only ones while inspecting. Resolver endpoint security groups on port 53 must list your on-premises CIDR ranges or known DNS server IPs, never `0.0.0.0/0`, because an open rule exposes the endpoint. Query logs and health-check notifications get encrypted at rest. The Global Resolver access token returned at creation time belongs in AWS Secrets Manager, since plaintext storage leaks infrastructure topology.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill route53 -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/route53/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/route53/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill route53 -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/route53/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill route53 -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/route53/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws route53
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/route53/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill route53 -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --path skills/specialized-skills/networking-and-content-delivery-skills/route53
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/route53/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill route53 -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws/tree/HEAD/skills/specialized-skills/networking-and-content-delivery-skills/route53/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- point a hostname at an AWS resource
- send a slice of traffic to a new version by weight
- move traffic to another Region during an outage
- block malicious domains for a VPC at the resolver
- resolve private names across an office and the cloud

## Example prompts
- Create a public A record `api.example.org` pointing at the load balancer in `us-east-1`
- Split traffic between the old and new stack with weights 90 and 10
- Set up a health check on the endpoint and wire it into failover

# Amazon Route 53

## Overview

Domain expertise for configuring Amazon Route 53 DNS across the public and private resolution
paths: hosted zone records, traffic-steering routing policies, health checks, DNS Firewall,
Route 53 Profiles, VPC Resolver (also known as Route 53 Resolver) for hybrid and Outposts networks,
and Global Resolver.

This skill is a router. Each customer task maps to a procedure file under `references/`. Read the
matching reference in full before acting, then follow its constraints and steps. The reference
files are self-contained: each carries its own decision tables, constraints, procedure, and
troubleshooting.

Execute commands using the AWS MCP server when connected (sandboxed execution, audit logging,
observability). Fall back to the AWS CLI otherwise. All Route 53 Domains API calls are made in
`us-east-1` regardless of where the customer works.

## Which Route 53 task do you need?

| Goal | Reference |
| --- | --- |
| Point a hostname or zone apex at an IP, AWS resource, or hostname | [creating a public DNS record](references/creating-a-public-dns-record.md) |
| Split traffic across endpoints in a ratio (blue/green, canary, A/B) | [splitting traffic with weighted routing](references/splitting-traffic-with-weighted-routing.md) |
| Fail over between two Regions for disaster recovery | [configuring failover routing](references/configuring-failover-routing.md) |
| Monitor whether an endpoint is up and get alerted | [setting up a health check](references/setting-up-a-route53-health-check.md) |
| Block malicious domains for a VPC at the resolver | [blocking malicious domains](references/blocking-malicious-domains.md) |
