## What it does

The tool is a Go CLI built to communicate with `https://mcp.meme.rodeo`. It handles meme lookups by keyword, pulls specific entries by ID, lists fresh uploads, and retrieves general catalog metrics.

It runs in two distinct modes. You can execute direct queries using `rodeo call` or launch a persistent stdio server via `rodeo serve`. Registering that command inside `.mcp.json` makes tools like `search_memes`, `random_memes`, and `meme_stats` accessible to agents.

Running queries without building the binary or passing an API key triggers an immediate failure. Authentication prioritizes the `--api-key` flag and `RODEO_API_KEY` before checking OAuth tokens or `~/.config/rodeo/config.yaml`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add harperreed/dotfiles --skill rodeo -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/rodeo/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/rodeo/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add harperreed/dotfiles --skill rodeo -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/rodeo/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add harperreed/dotfiles --skill rodeo -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/rodeo/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install harperreed/dotfiles rodeo
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/rodeo/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add harperreed/dotfiles --skill rodeo -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/harperreed/dotfiles --path .claude/skills-archive/rodeo
```

- File: `.devin/skills/rodeo/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add harperreed/dotfiles --skill rodeo -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/harperreed/dotfiles/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills-archive/rodeo/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- search the meme catalog using keyword queries
- fetch random memes for visual ideas
- retrieve collection statistics from meme-rodeo
- expose meme-rodeo tools as a local stdio MCP proxy

## Example prompts
- Search for cat memes using rodeo
- Check the meme-rodeo collection stats
- Give me three random memes from rodeo
