## What it does

The skill covers embedding Rive animations on the web and in React. It walks through the core pieces: state machines, three input types (boolean, number, trigger), ViewModel for two-way data binding, and custom events sent from the animation back to code. Ready-made patterns come with `rive-react` examples.

Pattern one is a plain animation via the `Rive` component with `src`, `artboard`, `animations` and `layout`. Pattern two drives a state machine through `useRive` and `useStateMachineInput`: a mouse hover flips a boolean input, a click fires a trigger. Pattern three binds data — `useViewModel`, `useViewModelInstance` and hooks like `useViewModelInstanceString` or `useViewModelInstanceNumber` push text, numbers and colors into the animation. Pattern four handles events emitted by the animation.

You need the `rive-react` package, and the `.riv` file comes from the Rive editor. If the animation is timeline-only, with no state machine and no inputs, the skill adds nothing over Lottie — worth checking the file before you install anything.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add freshtechbro/claudedesignskills --skill rive-interactive -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/rive-interactive/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/rive-interactive/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add freshtechbro/claudedesignskills --skill rive-interactive -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/rive-interactive/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add freshtechbro/claudedesignskills --skill rive-interactive -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/rive-interactive/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install freshtechbro/claudedesignskills rive-interactive
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/rive-interactive/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add freshtechbro/claudedesignskills --skill rive-interactive -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/freshtechbro/claudedesignskills --path plugins/bundles/authoring-motion/skills/rive-interactive
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/rive-interactive/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add freshtechbro/claudedesignskills --skill rive-interactive -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- build a button that changes state on hover and click
- bind live data to an animation through ViewModel
- catch an event emitted by a Rive animation in React
- wire up an interactive loader or toggle
- work with boolean, number and trigger inputs

## Example prompts
- Build an interactive Rive button: hover sets isHovered, click fires the trigger
- Bind the stockPrice number to my Rive dashboard through ViewModel
- Show me how to catch a custom event from a Rive animation in React

# Rive Interactive - State Machine-Based Vector Animation

## Overview

Rive is a state machine-based animation platform that enables designers to create interactive vector animations with complex logic and runtime interactivity. Unlike timeline-only animation tools (like Lottie), Rive supports state machines, input handling, and two-way data binding between application code and animations.

**Key Features**:
- State machine system for complex interactive logic
- ViewModel API for two-way data binding
- Input handling (boolean, number, trigger inputs)
- Custom events for animation-to-code communication
- Runtime property control (colors, strings, numbers, enums)
- Cross-platform support (Web, React, React Native, iOS, Android, Flutter)
- Small file sizes with vector graphics

**When to Use This Skill**:
- Creating UI animations with complex state transitions
- Building interactive animated components (buttons, toggles, loaders)
- Implementing game-like UI with state-driven animations
- Binding real-time data to animated visualizations
- Creating animations that respond to user input
- Working with designer-created animations requiring runtime control

**Alternatives**:
- **Lottie** (lottie-animations): For simpler timeline-based animations without state machines
- **Framer Motion** (motion-framer): For code-first React animations with spring physics
- **GSAP** (gsap-scrolltrigger): For timeline-based web animations with precise control

## Core Concepts

### 1. State Machines

State machines define animation behavior with states and transitions:
- **States**: Different animation states (e.g., idle, hover, pressed)
- **Inputs**: Variables that control transitions (boolean, number, trigger)
- **Transitions**: Rules for moving between states
- **Listeners**: React hooks to respond to state changes

### 2. Inputs

Three input types control state machine behavior:
- **Boolean**: On/off states (e.g., isHovered, isActive)
