# review-paper

Reviews academic manuscripts and flags issues in their reasoning and methods. Choose a standard report, an iterative critique-and-revision cycle, or a simulated journal review.

## What it does

The skill reads research manuscripts in `.tex`, `.pdf`, or `.qmd` format, as well as files stored in `master_supporting_docs/`. Its default mode produces a single review report for authors to use during their next revision. The feedback focuses on weaknesses in the paper rather than making edits automatically.

With `--adversarial`, a critic identifies flaws and a fixer proposes and applies changes with user approval before the critic checks the manuscript again. The `--peer <JOURNAL>` mode simulates an editor, two independent referees, and a final editorial assessment. Use `--r2` or `--r3` to revisit earlier referee concerns, `--stress` for a deliberately skeptical assessment, or `--variance N` to compare outcomes across independently assigned reviewer dispositions.

When the manuscript references scripts, the skill also invokes `/review-r` and `/audit-reproducibility` unless `--no-cross-artifact` is supplied. Novelty checks through WebSearch are enabled by default. Search results can contain incorrect citations or miss recent paywalled work, so treat them as leads for manual verification rather than final judgments. Journal-specific calibration relies on `.claude/references/journal-profiles.md`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pedrohcgs/claude-code-my-workflow --skill review-paper -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/review-paper/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/review-paper/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pedrohcgs/claude-code-my-workflow --skill review-paper -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/review-paper/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pedrohcgs/claude-code-my-workflow --skill review-paper -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/review-paper/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install pedrohcgs/claude-code-my-workflow review-paper
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/review-paper/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pedrohcgs/claude-code-my-workflow --skill review-paper -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/pedrohcgs/claude-code-my-workflow --path .claude/skills/review-paper
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/review-paper/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add pedrohcgs/claude-code-my-workflow --skill review-paper -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- Identify gaps in a paper's reasoning
- Review a manuscript before journal submission
- Simulate editorial decisions for a target journal
- Track which referee concerns remain after revision
- Compare possible outcomes across reviewer dispositions

## Example prompts
- Review `paper.tex` and write a report covering the main weaknesses in the argument.
- Run an iterative critique and revision cycle on `paper.pdf` with `--adversarial`.
- Simulate journal review using `--peer <JOURNAL> --variance 3` and compare the possible decisions.

# Manuscript Review

Produce a thorough, constructive review of an academic manuscript — the kind of report a top-journal referee would write.

> **Which review skill do I want?**
>
> - **`/review-paper`** (this skill) — single comprehensive report, optional `--adversarial` critic-fixer loop, or `--peer <journal>` simulated peer-review pipeline. Best for **most drafts**.
> - **`/seven-pass-review`** — seven independent lenses in parallel (abstract, intro, methods, results, robustness, prose, citations) then synthesized. Heavier (7× token cost). Best for **submission-ready drafts** or **R&R stage** where you need maximum coverage.
> - **`/respond-to-referees`** — if you already have referee comments and need a response document, not another review.
> - **`/slide-excellence`** — for lecture slides, not papers.

**Input:** `$ARGUMENTS` — path to a paper (`.tex`, `.pdf`, or `.qmd`), or a filename in `master_supporting_docs/`. Optional flags:

- `--adversarial` — critic-fixer loop until dry (2 consecutive dry rounds; fallback cap 5).
- `--peer <JOURNAL>` — simulated peer review pipeline calibrated to `<JOURNAL>` (see `.claude/references/journal-profiles.md` for available short names).
- `--r2` / `--r3` — R&R continuation mode (requires `--peer`). Reloads prior round, classifies concerns Resolved / Partial / Not addressed.
- `--stress` — hostile-editor stress test (requires `--peer`). Forces SKEPTIC dispositions, doubles critical peeves.
