# reverse-document

Reads code or a prototype you already have and writes the design doc or ADR that was never written. Useful when the feature exists but the description does not.

## What it does

Call it as `/reverse-document <type> <path>`. The type picks the output: `design` for a game design document section, `architecture` for an Architecture Decision Record, `concept` for a document built from a prototype. The path points at a folder or a file — `src/gameplay/combat/` in Godot, `Assets/Scripts/Core/EventSystem.cs` in Unity, `Source/MyGame/Private/AI/` in Unreal.

The skill reads the implementation and pulls out mechanics, formulas and tuning values, then asks about intent. That part matters. It does not paraphrase your code back at you; it asks whether a resource depletes during an activity for pacing or for strategic depth, and whether a mechanic is a core pillar or a supporting feature. Findings come first, as a list you can correct before any drafting starts.

How much document you get depends on the workflow tier resolved from your project config, not on the skill's own guess. At `full` that is an 8-section GDD, at `minimal` a one-page brief. There is also a stop condition: if the target path holds fewer than roughly 20 lines of non-boilerplate code and no mechanics, formulas or tuning values, the skill halts and points you at `/design-system`, which asks instead of inferring. That beats a tidy document full of invented content.

## Requirements
- Works with: Unity, Unreal Engine, Godot

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios --skill reverse-document -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/reverse-document/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/reverse-document/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios --skill reverse-document -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/reverse-document/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios --skill reverse-document -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/reverse-document/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios reverse-document
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/reverse-document/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios --skill reverse-document -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios --path .claude/skills/reverse-document
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/reverse-document/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios --skill reverse-document -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Donchitos/Claude-Code-Game-Studios/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/reverse-document/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- recover a design doc from a mechanic that already ships
- document an inherited codebase with no docs
- turn a prototype into a concept document
- record the reasoning behind technical decisions as an ADR
- surface formulas and tuning values scattered through the code

## Example prompts
- /reverse-document design src/gameplay/magic-system
- /reverse-document architecture Source/MyGame/Private/EntityComponent
- /reverse-document concept prototypes/vehicle-combat

# Reverse Documentation

This skill analyzes existing implementation (code, prototypes, systems) and generates
appropriate design or architecture documentation. Use this when:
- You built a feature without writing a design doc first
- You inherited a codebase without documentation
- You prototyped a mechanic and need to formalize it
- You need to document "why" behind existing code

---

## Workflow

## Phase 1: Parse Arguments

**Format**: `/reverse-document <type> <path>`

**Type options**:
- `design` → Generate a game design document (GDD section)
- `architecture` → Generate an Architecture Decision Record (ADR)
- `concept` → Generate a concept document from prototype

**Path**: Directory or file to analyze, under the code root — `src/` Godot,
`Assets/` Unity, `Source/<Module>/` Unreal (`.claude/docs/code-root-resolution.md`)
- `src/gameplay/combat/` → All combat-related code (Godot)
- `Assets/Scripts/Core/EventSystem.cs` → Specific file (Unity)
- `Source/MyGame/Private/AI/` → A module folder (Unreal)
- `prototypes/stealth-mech/` → Prototype directory

!`bash "${CLAUDE_SKILL_DIR}/../../hooks/yaml-helper.sh" resolve_config --keys workflow,system_overrides,automation`

**Automation mode**: Resolve `modes.automation` (`project.local.yaml` →
`project.yaml` → default `collaborative`). Every `AskUserQuestion` call and
every file write follows `.claude/docs/automation-modes.md`
(collaborative asks always · guided major-only · autonomous logs and proceeds;
`automation_always_ask` categories always prompt).

Resolved above — use as-is. No block → defaults in
`.claude/docs/config-resolution.md`.

**Resolve the workflow tier** for the target system: map `<path>` to a system
```
The third-party file has ended. Everything between the cd58594c966dc668 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
