# revenue-data-governance-strategy

A skill that settles which system authors revenue records and which one holds the reconciled truth. Useful when finance and sales quote different ARR numbers.

## What it does

The skill designs org-wide governance for revenue data. It walks each object class — account, contact, opportunity, subscription, usage event, revenue metrics — and decides which system writes the record and which one serves the reconciled value decisions read from. Keeping system of record and source of truth apart is not optional: the write path and the read path want opposite properties, and asking one system to do both is the recurring design mistake.

The deliverable is a designation table, an identity-resolution spine, a data-contract register, and a federated ownership model with a council for disputes. Publish the designation table before buying any tooling — otherwise the new software just renders the same argument in a fresh UI. Contracts stay narrow, applied only at the boundaries whose breakage takes down revenue reporting.

The finance-versus-sales fight is treated as a definitional problem, not a data-quality one. Bookings, billings, recognized revenue and ARR are four different numbers that never match by design, so the agreement between teams comes first and the encoded artifact second. The skill covers B2B, PLG/B2C and hybrid motions; field-level rules inside a single CRM belong to `mbfinotti/revops-skills@crm-data-governance` instead.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/revops-skills --skill revenue-data-governance-strategy -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/revenue-data-governance-strategy/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/revenue-data-governance-strategy/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/revops-skills --skill revenue-data-governance-strategy -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/revenue-data-governance-strategy/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/revops-skills --skill revenue-data-governance-strategy -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/revenue-data-governance-strategy/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mbfinotti/revops-skills revenue-data-governance-strategy
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/revenue-data-governance-strategy/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/revops-skills --skill revenue-data-governance-strategy -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mbfinotti/revops-skills --path skills/revenue-data-governance-strategy
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/revenue-data-governance-strategy/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/revops-skills --skill revenue-data-governance-strategy -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- split write and read paths per object class
- settle the fight over two different ARR numbers
- assign an owner to each revenue metric definition
- bind producer teams to consumers with data contracts
- stitch users to accounts in a hybrid motion

## Example prompts
- Work out why finance and sales report different ARR numbers and draft a source-of-truth table per object class
- Set revenue data governance policy: who owns metric definitions and how disputes get arbitrated
- Describe the data contracts between billing and the warehouse for usage events

name: revenue-data-governance-strategy
description: Set org-wide revenue data governance policy - which system is source of truth per object class (account, contact, opportunity, subscription, usage event, revenue metrics), how cross-team data contracts bind producers to consumers, where revenue metric definitions live, and who arbitrates disputes. Produces a per-object SOR/SOT designation table, an identity-resolution spine, a data-contract register, and a federated ownership model. Use whenever the user mentions source of truth, "two ARR numbers", GTM data contracts, revenue data governance, metric definition ownership, or "finance and sales report different numbers" - even if they never say "governance". Covers B2B, PLG/B2C, hybrid. Do NOT use for CRM field-level rules - use mbfinotti/revops-skills@crm-data-governance instead.

# Revenue Data Governance Strategy

You are a revenue data governance strategist. Design the org-wide policy that fixes, for every revenue object class and metric:

- Which system authors it.
- Which system is the read-side truth.
- Who owns it.
- How producer teams bind to consumer teams.
- Where disputes get arbitrated.

The deliverable is a designation table plus the operating model that enforces it - not a cleanup, not a tool purchase, and not field rules inside one CRM.

Stay at system altitude. Field-level governance is a hygiene problem inside one system. This is an integration and authority problem across systems, and the first does not scale up into the second.

A validation rule can guarantee an opportunity has an ARR value. It cannot make that value match the billing subscription or the general ledger. Field mechanics belong to the sibling skill in Reference.
