## What it does

The skill inspects `§Chains` and `§Done When` sections across `SKILL.md` files under `plugins/`. It targets fire-and-forget dispatches where a caller triggers a downstream skill but proceeds independently. Every caller-callee link is classified as either `CLOSED` or `OPEN` with explicit repair recommendations.

Verification relies on a mandatory two-pass inspection. Pass A scans caller criteria for waiting signals like "wait for", "verdict received", or "folds back". Pass B checks the callee for structured results: `Verdict: PASS | CONDITIONAL_PASS | FAIL | ESCALATE`. An unhandled condition under `CONDITIONAL_PASS` triggers an immediate OPEN status due to an unresolved verdict gap.

Git access is mandatory to resolve execution targets. The skill operates using `Read`, `Bash`, `Glob`, and `Grep`. If Git fails or a diff reference is broken, the skill halts with a `HARNESS_ERROR` to prevent treating tool failures as clean passes.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrono-meta/forge-harness --skill return-path-gate -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/return-path-gate/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/return-path-gate/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrono-meta/forge-harness --skill return-path-gate -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/return-path-gate/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrono-meta/forge-harness --skill return-path-gate -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/return-path-gate/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install chrono-meta/forge-harness return-path-gate
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/return-path-gate/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrono-meta/forge-harness --skill return-path-gate -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/chrono-meta/forge-harness --path plugins/fh-meta/skills/return-path-gate
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/return-path-gate/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrono-meta/forge-harness --skill return-path-gate -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/chrono-meta/forge-harness/tree/HEAD/plugins/fh-meta/skills/return-path-gate/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- detect fire-and-forget dispatches across subagent skills
- verify §Chains and §Done When declarations in SKILL.md files
- flag unhandled CONDITIONAL_PASS conditions between skills
- audit modified skill chains prior to opening a PR

## Example prompts
- Run return-path check on modified SKILL.md files
- /return-path-gate --skill harvest-loop
- Perform chain closure audit across plugins/ with --all

# return-path-gate — Skill Chain Closure Audit

A skill chain is CLOSED when the callee's verdict folds back into the caller's decision logic. A chain is OPEN (fire-and-forget) when the caller dispatches a downstream skill but proceeds independently of the result.

This skill audits `§Chains` and `§Done When` sections across SKILL.md files to detect OPEN chains and prescribe specific closures.

## Role Separation from harness-doctor

| Dimension | harness-doctor | return-path-gate |
|---|---|---|
| **What it checks** | Structural completeness (files, references, line counts, drift) | Chain closure compliance (caller/callee verdict handoff) |
| **Core question** | "Are the required harness files present and consistent?" | "Does the caller wait for the callee's verdict?" |
| **Failure mode detected** | Missing CLAUDE.md, broken refs, complexity drift | Fire-and-forget chains, unverified CONDITIONAL_PASS conditions |
| **Output** | L1–L5 structural health report | CLOSED/OPEN chain table with fix prescriptions |

---

## Trigger Phrases

| Phrase | Situation |
|---|---|
| "chain audit", "chain closure audit" | Full scan of all skill chains in plugins/ |
| "return-path check", "return-path gate" | Explicit compliance audit |
| "fire-and-forget detection", "fire-and-forget chain" | Targeting known anti-pattern |
| "skill chain compliance" | Pre-flight check before pipeline execution |
| "does this skill wait for verdict" | Single-skill targeted check |
| "check chains in [skill-name]" | Scoped audit on a named skill |
| `/return-path-gate` | Explicit call |

---

## Audit Scope Options

| Flag | Scope | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| `--skill [name]` | Single named skill | Targeted check during development |
| `--all` | All SKILL.md files under `plugins/` | Full compliance sweep |
| `--pr` | Skills changed relative to `origin/main` | Pre-PR gate mode (worktree-aware) |
| *(default)* | Modified + newly added SKILL.md files in working tree | Pre-commit gate mode |

---

## Execution Steps

### Step 0. Determine Scope

```bash
# Default: modified and newly added SKILL.md files in working tree
{ git diff --name-only HEAD; git ls-files --others --exclude-standard; } | grep "SKILL\.md"
# --pr mode: PR-relative, worktree-aware (use for pre-PR audits)
