## What it does

The skill splits churn into voluntary (a customer cancels) and involuntary (a payment fails, a card expires), then looks at signals like login frequency, feature usage and support tickets to place the account at onboarding, expansion or renewal. From there it suggests tactics per stage: health scoring, loyalty programs, segmentation, and dunning with retry logic and pre-expiry card updates.

A second part covers user value and feedback. Testimonials, customer stories, webinar guests, bug reports and feature requests all count, and the skill warns against treating people as nothing but an MAU denominator. It also routes feedback between product and ops.

Retention sits after conversion here, as ongoing customer success rather than a one-off campaign. The skill reads `contextus.md` at the project root when it exists and loads only the modules it needs; without it, it works from project material and asks for what is missing. Lifecycle work has its own skill, `growth-funnel` — this one is about retention.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill retention-strategy -a claude-code
```
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill retention -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/retention/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/retention/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill retention -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/retention/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill retention -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/retention/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install kostja94/marketing-skills retention
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/retention/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill retention -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/kostja94/marketing-skills --path skills/strategies/launch/retention
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/retention/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add kostja94/marketing-skills --skill retention -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/kostja94/marketing-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/strategies/launch/retention/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- tell voluntary churn from involuntary
- spot accounts likely to cancel within weeks
- build a health score from behavioral and transactional signals
- set up retries and card updates before expiry
- route feedback to product or ops

## Example prompts
- break down why our churn is rising and suggest retention tactics by stage
- build a health score for customers who stopped logging in
- which signals predict a cancellation a month ahead

# Strategies: Retention

Guides customer retention and churn prevention. Acquiring new customers costs 5–25× more than retaining; 5% retention improvement can increase profitability 25–95%. Use this skill when reducing churn, building retention programs, or identifying at-risk customers.

**When invoking**: On **first use**, if helpful, open with 1–2 sentences on what this skill covers and why it matters, then provide the main output. On **subsequent use** or when the user asks to skip, go directly to the main output.

## Initial Assessment

**Project context:** Read root `contextus.md` when present and load only the modules relevant to this task. Without Contextus, use available project material or user-provided facts and ask for missing information; do not create a parallel context system.

Identify:
1. **Churn type**: Voluntary (active cancel) vs involuntary (payment failure)
2. **Signals**: Login frequency, feature usage, support tickets
3. **Stage**: Onboarding, expansion, renewal

## Churn Types

| Type | Share | Causes |
|------|-------|--------|
| **Voluntary** | 60–80% | Pricing, missing features, poor onboarding, relationship |
| **Involuntary** | 20–40% | Payment failures, expired cards, billing |

**Predictability**: Most churn is predictable 30–90 days before cancellation via behavioral signals.

## Proactive vs Reactive

| Approach | Conversion |
|----------|------------|
| **Reactive** (after cancel) | 15–20% |
| **Proactive** (before decision) | 60–80% |

Move from lagging indicator to early warning systems.

## Retention Strategies

| Strategy | Use |
|----------|-----|
| **Health scoring** | Behavioral + transactional + relationship signals |
| **Loyalty programs** | 5–15 percentage point retention lift |
| **Segmentation** | Predictive modeling for at-risk |
| **Onboarding** | Prevent low value realization early |
| **Dunning** | Retry logic; pre-expiry card updates for involuntary |

## User Value & Feedback

| Dimension | Use |
|-----------|-----|
| **Product value** | Registration; feature usage; payment |
| **Marketing value** | Testimonials; customer stories; webinar guests; feedback, bug reports, feature requests |
| **Feedback analysis** | Email, community, reviews—AI-assisted analysis; prioritize by impact; route to product vs ops |
