## What it does

This skill produces job application documents: a resume, a cover letter, or both. Everything is tied to one role at one company, since generic documents do not help. Before writing, it asks for what is missing: job title, company, the listing itself, the mode you want, your region and your background. Hand it the listing text or URL and it pulls out the key requirements, then mirrors the wording the listing uses for skills and responsibilities.

Format follows the region. AU/NZ, US and UK differ in document name and expected length, and in what you include: no photo or date of birth anywhere, visa status is common for AU/NZ and UK, while in the US it is left out because of discrimination risk. Section order shifts with seniority, so graduates get education above experience and executives get a key achievements block plus professional memberships.

Experience bullets follow the Challenge — Action — Result shape, and the skill pushes for measurable outcomes: percentages, dollar amounts, scale or time saved. No numbers? It asks you to estimate, or falls back to qualitative phrasing. For ATS parsing it recommends standard headings, fonts like Calibri or Arial, no tables, columns, images or headers and footers, and PDF unless the listing asks for .docx. Cover letters stay at three or four paragraphs on one page, and the opening line about writing to express interest is not welcome.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill resume-cover-letter -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/resume-cover-letter/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/resume-cover-letter/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill resume-cover-letter -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/resume-cover-letter/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill resume-cover-letter -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/resume-cover-letter/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jezweb/claude-skills resume-cover-letter
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/resume-cover-letter/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill resume-cover-letter -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**

npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill resume-cover-letter -a opencode
```
### Claude.ai
**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills
Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/jezweb/claude-skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/writing/skills/resume-cover-letter/SKILL.md
## When to use it
# Resume and Cover Letter Writer
Produces job application documents: a resume/CV, a cover letter, or both. Every output is tailored to a specific role at a specific company — generic documents are not useful.
## Before You Start
Gather these inputs. Ask for anything missing:
1. **Target role** — job title, company name, and the job listing or description (paste or URL)
2. **Mode** — "resume", "cover-letter", or "both"
3. **Region** — AU/NZ, US, or UK (affects format, terminology, length expectations)
4. **Candidate background** — current role, years of experience, key skills, education, career highlights
5. **Special circumstances** (if any) — career change, employment gap, overqualified, underqualified, visa/relocation
If the user provides a job listing, extract the key requirements and tailor everything to match them. Mirror the language the listing uses for skills and responsibilities.
## Resume / CV
### Regional Format Differences
| Element | AU/NZ | US | UK |
|---------|-------|----|----|
| Name | CV or resume (both accepted) | Resume | CV |
| Length | 2-3 pages standard | 1 page (<10 years exp), 2 max | 2 pages standard |
| Photo | No | No | No |
| Date of birth / age | No | No | No |
| Nationality / visa | Include if relevant (common in AU/NZ) | No (discrimination risk) | Include visa status if applicable |
| Referees | "Available on request" is outdated — omit entirely, or list 2 if specifically requested | Omit | Omit |
| Address | City/state only (no street) | City/state only | City only |
### Section Order
Adjust based on seniority and what sells the candidate best:
**Entry-level / graduate (0-3 years):**
1. Contact details
2. Professional summary (3-4 lines)
3. Education
4. Experience (internships, part-time, volunteer)
5. Skills
6. Certifications / projects
**Mid-career (3-10 years):**
1. Contact details
```
