## What it does

The skill loads a URL, then changes the window width through 320, 375, 768, 1024, 1280, 1440, 1920 and 2560 px without leaving the session. At every width it grabs the above-the-fold area, plus the lower part when the page runs long. Adjacent widths are then put side by side.

Transitions are the point. You get the spots where the column count shifts, where full navigation collapses into a hamburger, where a sidebar enters or leaves. Each finding carries the width range it happens in, so the CSS breakpoint to edit is clear. Eight checks run alongside: horizontal overflow, truncated text, image scaling, touch targets under 44 px, and whether the main call to action stays visible without scrolling.

Three modes cover different needs — the standard pass over 8 widths, a sweep every 160 px from 320 to 2560, and a requested range stepped at 80 px. Sweep and multi-URL runs ask for a quick go-ahead first. A browser tool is required: playwright-cli, Playwright MCP or Chrome MCP. With none of them installed the skill says so instead of testing. Accessibility does not fall in its scope; the same collection has ux-audit for that.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill responsiveness-check -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/responsiveness-check/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/responsiveness-check/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill responsiveness-check -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/responsiveness-check/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill responsiveness-check -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/responsiveness-check/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jezweb/claude-skills responsiveness-check
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/responsiveness-check/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill responsiveness-check -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jezweb/claude-skills --path plugins/dev-tools/skills/responsiveness-check
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/responsiveness-check/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jezweb/claude-skills --skill responsiveness-check -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/jezweb/claude-skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/dev-tools/skills/responsiveness-check/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pin down the exact width where the grid collapses
- catch horizontal overflow on a narrow screen
- confirm the nav switches to a hamburger with no broken in-between state
- check that the primary button stays above the fold at every width
- get one layout report across several pages

## Example prompts
- Run a responsiveness check on https://example.com starting at 320 px
- Sweep all breakpoints and tell me where the layout breaks
- Test the range between 768 and 1024 px and show me the screenshots

# Responsiveness Check

Test how a website's layout responds to viewport width changes. Resizes through breakpoints in a single browser session, screenshots each width, compares adjacent sizes, and reports where layouts break.

**What this tests**: Layout responsiveness — overflow, stacking, navigation transitions, content reflow.

**What this does NOT test**: General accessibility (ARIA, semantic HTML, heading hierarchy, colour contrast). Those don't vary by viewport width — use the ux-audit skill instead.

## Browser Tool Priority

Before starting, detect available browser tools:

1. **playwright-cli** (preferred) — supports resize, named sessions, and sub-agent parallelism. If installed, run `/playwright-cli` first to load the full command reference.
2. **Playwright MCP** (`mcp__plugin_playwright_playwright__*`) — `browser_resize` for viewport changes.
3. **Chrome MCP** (`mcp__claude-in-chrome__*`) — `resize_window` for viewport changes. Uses the user's logged-in Chrome session.

If none are available, inform the user and suggest installing playwright-cli or Playwright MCP.

## Operating Modes

### Mode 1: Standard Check

**When**: "check responsive", "responsiveness check", "test breakpoints"

Test 8 key breakpoints that cover the device spectrum:

| Width | Device Context |
|-------|---------------|
| 320px | Small phone (iPhone SE) |
| 375px | Standard phone (iPhone 14) |
| 768px | Tablet portrait (iPad) |
| 1024px | Tablet landscape / small laptop |
| 1280px | Laptop |
| 1440px | Desktop |
| 1920px | Full HD |
| 2560px | Ultra-wide / 4K |

**Process**:

1. Open the URL in a single browser session (height: 900px)
2. Start at 320px. For each breakpoint width:
   a. Resize the viewport
   b. Wait briefly for CSS reflow (layout transition)
   c. Screenshot the above-fold area
   d. If the page has significant below-fold content, scroll and screenshot
   e. Run the 8 layout checks (see matrix below)
```
