## What it does

This skill organizes ten guideline files across six categories, covering modern layout, React patterns, PWA capabilities, animations, and touch interactions. It shifts component architecture away from global viewport media queries toward container sizes. It also blocks bad habits: viewport-only units like `5vw` for font sizes, desktop-first overrides, and physical `cqw`/`cqh` dimensions instead of logical `cqi`/`cqb` units.

When writing code, the assistant loads references such as `rules/css-subgrid.md` and `rules/react-patterns.md`. Fluid typography rules insist on combining `rem` with viewport units inside `clamp()` so browser zoom settings remain functional. For React codebases, it provides patterns for the `useContainerQuery` hook, Tailwind container plugins, and responsive images.

Compatibility with Claude Code requires version 2.1.277+. Production deployments must account for browser support: basic container size queries need Chrome 105+ or Safari 16+, while CSS Subgrid requires Chrome 117+.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yonatangross/orchestkit --skill responsive-patterns -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/responsive-patterns/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/responsive-patterns/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yonatangross/orchestkit --skill responsive-patterns -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/responsive-patterns/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yonatangross/orchestkit --skill responsive-patterns -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/responsive-patterns/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install yonatangross/orchestkit responsive-patterns
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/responsive-patterns/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yonatangross/orchestkit --skill responsive-patterns -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/yonatangross/orchestkit --path src/skills/responsive-patterns
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/responsive-patterns/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add yonatangross/orchestkit --skill responsive-patterns -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- build container-relative layouts using logical cqi and cqb units
- implement accessible fluid typography with clamp() and rem scaling
- align nested grid items across cards with CSS Subgrid
- handle dual-screen layouts and safe area insets on foldable devices
- integrate the useContainerQuery hook and Tailwind container queries in React

## Example prompts
- Create a ResponsiveCard component using Tailwind container queries
- Refactor this card grid to CSS Subgrid with auto-fit and minmax
- Apply accessible fluid font scaling with clamp() to this heading

# Responsive Patterns

Modern responsive design patterns using Container Queries, fluid typography, and mobile-first strategies for React applications (2026 best practices).

## Overview

- Building reusable components that adapt to their container
- Implementing fluid typography that scales smoothly
- Creating responsive layouts without media query overload
- Building design system components for multiple contexts
- Optimizing for variable container sizes (sidebars, modals, grids)

## Core Concepts

### Container Queries vs Media Queries

| Feature | Media Queries | Container Queries |
|---------|---------------|-------------------|
| Responds to | Viewport size | Container size |
| Component reuse | Context-dependent | Truly portable |
| Browser support | Universal | Baseline 2023+ |
| Use case | Page layouts | Component layouts |

## Modern CSS Layout

> Load `Read("rules/css-subgrid.md")` for CSS Subgrid patterns: nested grid alignment, card layouts with aligned titles/content/actions, two-dimensional subgrid.

> Load `Read("rules/css-intrinsic-responsive.md")` for intrinsically responsive layouts: auto-fit/minmax grids, clamp() for fluid everything, container queries for component logic, zero media query patterns.

> Load `Read("rules/responsive-foldables.md")` for foldable/multi-screen device support: env(safe-area-inset-*), viewport segment queries, dual-screen layouts, progressive enhancement.

**Key patterns covered:** CSS Subgrid alignment, intrinsic responsive grids (auto-fit + minmax), fluid clamp() scales, foldable device layouts, safe area insets, viewport segment queries.
