## What it does

This skill guides coding agents through responsive layout decisions using mobile-first standards. It includes practical examples for common structures: Holy Grail layouts, collapsible sidebars, auto-fitting card grids with `minmax`, sticky navigation headers, and column-based masonry layouts.

The instructions establish explicit criteria for selecting between Flexbox and CSS Grid. Flexbox is designated for one-dimensional distribution like navigation bars or card alignment, while Grid handles page structures, two-dimensional card layouts, and overlapping elements. Fluid typography templates using CSS `clamp()` and a viewport testing checklist from 320px to 1280px+ are also included.

The container query examples require Tailwind CSS v3.2 or newer, so older project setups will fail to compile those utility classes without updating dependencies.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OneWave-AI/claude-skills --skill responsive-layout-builder -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/responsive-layout-builder/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/responsive-layout-builder/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OneWave-AI/claude-skills --skill responsive-layout-builder -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/responsive-layout-builder/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OneWave-AI/claude-skills --skill responsive-layout-builder -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/responsive-layout-builder/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install OneWave-AI/claude-skills responsive-layout-builder
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/responsive-layout-builder/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OneWave-AI/claude-skills --skill responsive-layout-builder -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/OneWave-AI/claude-skills --path responsive-layout-builder
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/responsive-layout-builder/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add OneWave-AI/claude-skills --skill responsive-layout-builder -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- build auto-fitting responsive card grids with CSS Grid and minmax
- implement collapsible sidebar layouts with scrollable main panels
- apply modern container queries to adapt components independently of screen size
- configure fluid responsive typography across breakpoints using clamp()

## Example prompts
- Create an auto-fill responsive card grid using Tailwind CSS with minmax sizing.
- Build a Holy Grail page layout with a sticky header and a sidebar that hides below 768px.
- Refactor this card component to use Tailwind container queries instead of media queries.

# Responsive Layout Builder

## Instructions

When building responsive layouts:

1. **Identify the layout pattern** (grid, sidebar, cards, etc.)
2. **Start mobile-first**
3. **Use appropriate CSS technique** (Grid vs Flexbox)
4. **Add breakpoints** for larger screens
5. **Test across viewports**

## Breakpoints

```css
/* Tailwind defaults */
sm: 640px   /* Small devices */
md: 768px   /* Tablets */
lg: 1024px  /* Laptops */
xl: 1280px  /* Desktops */
2xl: 1536px /* Large screens */
/* Custom CSS */
@media (min-width: 640px) { }
@media (min-width: 768px) { }
@media (min-width: 1024px) { }
```

## Common Layout Patterns

### 1. Holy Grail Layout

```tsx
// Tailwind CSS
<div className="min-h-screen flex flex-col">
  <header className="h-16 bg-white border-b">Header</header>
  <div className="flex-1 flex">
    <aside className="hidden md:block w-64 bg-gray-50 border-r">
      Sidebar
    </aside>
    <main className="flex-1 p-6">
      Main Content
    </main>
  </div>
  <footer className="h-16 bg-white border-t">Footer</footer>
</div>
```

```css
/* Plain CSS */
.layout {
  display: grid;
  grid-template-rows: auto 1fr auto;
  grid-template-columns: 1fr;
  min-height: 100vh;
}
@media (min-width: 768px) {
  .layout {
    grid-template-columns: 250px 1fr;
  }
  .header, .footer {
    grid-column: 1 / -1;
  }
}
```

### 2. Responsive Card Grid

```tsx
// Tailwind - Auto-fit cards
<div className="grid grid-cols-1 sm:grid-cols-2 lg:grid-cols-3 xl:grid-cols-4 gap-6">
  {items.map(item => (
    <Card key={item.id} {...item} />
  ))}
</div>
// Auto-fill with minimum width
<div className="grid grid-cols-[repeat(auto-fill,minmax(280px,1fr))] gap-6">
  {items.map(item => (
    <Card key={item.id} {...item} />
  ))}
</div>
```

```css
/* Plain CSS */
.card-grid {
  display: grid;
  grid-template-columns: repeat(auto-fill, minmax(280px, 1fr));
  gap: 1.5rem;
}
```

### 3. Sidebar Layout

```tsx
// Fixed sidebar, scrollable content
<div className="flex h-screen">
  <aside className="w-64 flex-shrink-0 overflow-y-auto border-r bg-gray-50">
    <nav className="p-4">Sidebar Nav</nav>
  </aside>
  <main className="flex-1 overflow-y-auto">
    <div className="p-6">Main Content</div>
  </main>
</div>
// Collapsible sidebar
<div className="flex h-screen">
  <aside className={cn(
    "flex-shrink-0 overflow-y-auto border-r bg-gray-50 transition-all",
    isOpen ? "w-64" : "w-16"
  )}>
````
