## What it does

This skill guides you through the initial configuration of Resilience Hub v2. It defines RTO and RPO targets for resilience policies, onboards application services, and connects input sources such as CloudFormation stacks or Terraform state files. Once mapped, it triggers a baseline failure mode assessment.

Operations execute through either the AWS MCP server or the AWS CLI directly. The workflow does not configure FIS experiments or ARC routing controls. If the assessment reports `NOT_ACHIEVABLE`, running chaos experiments makes no sense until the underlying infrastructure is corrected.

Security setup requires scoping the invoker role to read-only access for discovered resources. Adding an `aws:SourceAccount` condition to the trust policy prevents cross-service confused-deputy issues.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill resilience-hub-getting-started -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/resilience-hub-getting-started/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/resilience-hub-getting-started/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill resilience-hub-getting-started -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/resilience-hub-getting-started/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill resilience-hub-getting-started -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/resilience-hub-getting-started/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws resilience-hub-getting-started
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/resilience-hub-getting-started/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill resilience-hub-getting-started -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --path skills/specialized-skills/resilience-skills/resilience-hub-getting-started
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/resilience-hub-getting-started/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill resilience-hub-getting-started -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws/tree/HEAD/skills/specialized-skills/resilience-skills/resilience-hub-getting-started/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- configure RTO and RPO targets for resilience policies
- connect Terraform state or CloudFormation stacks to Resilience Hub
- run an initial failure mode assessment for a single service
- diagnose assessments stuck in IN_PROGRESS due to permissions

## Example prompts
- Help me set up AWS Resilience Hub v2 from scratch for this service
- Create a resilience policy with RTO and RPO goals and assess our stack
- Check why the Resilience Hub assessment is stuck in IN_PROGRESS

# Getting Started with AWS Resilience Hub v2

## Overview

Domain expertise for first-time Resilience Hub v2 setup: policies, systems, user journeys,
services, input sources, and failure mode assessments.

> The AWS MCP server is recommended for executing this skill's AWS API calls, but it is not required — all operations also work with the AWS CLI directly.

## Guardrail — where this skill's own files live (MCP vs local install)

Before reading a reference file, determine how this skill was loaded:

- **Loaded via the AWS MCP `retrieve_skill` tool:** the skill's reference files are not on the local filesystem. Fetch each one through `retrieve_skill` with the `file` parameter (e.g. `file="references/setup-procedure.md"`) — do NOT `file_read` these paths locally or search the filesystem for them.
- **Installed locally** (e.g. `.kiro/skills/resilience-hub-getting-started/` or `~/.claude/skills/resilience-hub-getting-started/`): read reference files from the local skill directory using the relative paths shown here.

This applies only to the skill's own reference files; always read and write user or session data in the working directory, never through `retrieve_skill`.

## Set up Resilience Hub v2

To configure Resilience Hub v2 from scratch, follow the procedure exactly.
See [references/setup-procedure.md](references/setup-procedure.md).

## Troubleshooting

### Assessment stuck in IN_PROGRESS

Poll with `aws resiliencehubv2 list-failure-mode-assessments`. If stuck >30 min, check
the `errorCode` field — common causes are INVALID_PERMISSIONS or CMK_ACCESS_DENIED on
cross-account roles.

### Achievability shows NOT_ACHIEVABLE

Your architecture cannot meet the policy targets. Fix infrastructure before running
FIS experiments — testing won't help if the architecture is fundamentally insufficient.

### No resources discovered
