## What it does

This skill runs AWS Resilience Hub v2 failure mode assessments and explains what they return. It covers finding severity, categories, recommendations, achievability triage, and remediation for a specific finding.

The workflow is kept in `references/assessment-workflow.md`. The skill also covers AI-generated service functions, including updates with `aws resiliencehubv2 update-service-function` and resource reassignment through `create-service-function-resources`. AWS MCP is recommended for AWS API calls, while the same operations can be run through the AWS CLI.

The invoker role needs access to describe resources in every configured region. If an assessment returns `INVALID_PERMISSIONS`, check `invokerRoleName` and any `crossAccountRoles`; that is the first place to look. This skill is for assessments and remediation, not initial Resilience Hub setup or FIS experiments.

## Requirements
- Works with: AWS

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill resilience-hub-failure-mode-assessment -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/resilience-hub-failure-mode-assessment/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/resilience-hub-failure-mode-assessment/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill resilience-hub-failure-mode-assessment -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/resilience-hub-failure-mode-assessment/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill resilience-hub-failure-mode-assessment -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/resilience-hub-failure-mode-assessment/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws resilience-hub-failure-mode-assessment
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/resilience-hub-failure-mode-assessment/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill resilience-hub-failure-mode-assessment -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --path skills/specialized-skills/resilience-skills/resilience-hub-failure-mode-assessment
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/resilience-hub-failure-mode-assessment/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws --skill resilience-hub-failure-mode-assessment -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aws/agent-toolkit-for-aws/tree/HEAD/skills/specialized-skills/resilience-skills/resilience-hub-failure-mode-assessment/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- run a Resilience Hub failure mode assessment
- sort findings by severity and category
- triage remediation by achievability
- update AI-generated service functions
- diagnose `INVALID_PERMISSIONS` access failures

## Example prompts
- Run an AWS Resilience Hub v2 failure mode assessment and explain the findings.
- Triage the findings by severity and achievability, starting with HIGH.
- I’m getting `INVALID_PERMISSIONS`. Check the invoker and cross-account role access.

# Failure Mode Assessment

## Overview

Domain expertise for running Resilience Hub v2 failure mode assessments, interpreting
findings, triaging by severity and achievability, and driving remediation.

> The AWS MCP server is recommended for executing this skill's AWS API calls, but it is not required — all operations also work with the AWS CLI directly.

## Guardrail — where this skill's own files live (MCP vs local install)

Before reading a reference file, determine how this skill was loaded:

- **Loaded via the AWS MCP `retrieve_skill` tool:** the skill's reference files are not on the local filesystem. Fetch each one through `retrieve_skill` with the `file` parameter (e.g. `file="references/assessment-workflow.md"`) — do NOT `file_read` these paths locally or search the filesystem for them.
- **Installed locally** (e.g. `.kiro/skills/resilience-hub-failure-mode-assessment/` or `~/.claude/skills/resilience-hub-failure-mode-assessment/`): read reference files from the local skill directory using the relative paths shown here.

This applies only to the skill's own reference files; always read and write user or session data in the working directory, never through `retrieve_skill`.

## Run and interpret assessments

To run assessments and triage findings, follow the procedure exactly.
See [references/assessment-workflow.md](references/assessment-workflow.md).

## Troubleshooting

### Assessment fails with INVALID_PERMISSIONS

The service's permission model (invokerRoleName / crossAccountRoles) doesn't have
access to the resources. Verify the invoker role (and any cross-account roles) can describe resources in all configured regions.

### Too many findings — where to start?
