## What it does

The skill gives an agent a fixed order of work on a topic: turn it into answerable questions and a query plan, run the searches, group what came back, then write the synthesis. Four phases — planning, execution, analysis, synthesis. Each has its own steps: break the topic into sub-topics, move from broad queries to narrow ones, judge sources by author expertise and publication date, and mark how confident each finding is.

Three templates ship with it: a research plan, a source evaluation checklist and a report template. For every search the agent records the query, how many results it reviewed and the key findings, then picks an output shape — executive summary, full report or action items.

The skill states its own prerequisite: web search capability. No WebSearch tool or similar, and the workflow has nothing to run on. It also expects you to have time for a multi-phase process; for a single fact it tells you to use plain web search instead. Worth checking your agent's tool access before installing.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill research-workflow -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/research-workflow/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/research-workflow/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill research-workflow -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/research-workflow/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill research-workflow -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/research-workflow/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install jwynia/agent-skills research-workflow
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/research-workflow/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill research-workflow -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/jwynia/agent-skills --path skills/general/research/methodology/research-workflow
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/research-workflow/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add jwynia/agent-skills --skill research-workflow -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- break a broad topic into sub-questions
- build a query plan that moves from broad to specific
- judge source credibility by author and date
- merge findings from several sources into one report
- flag where sources disagree and what is still missing

## Example prompts
- Research API versioning best practices and write up a report
- Do a deep dive: multiple queries, source evaluation, synthesis
- Investigate this topic and show me where the sources conflict

# Research Workflow

A structured methodology for conducting comprehensive research. This skill guides you through planning, executing, analyzing, and synthesizing research on any topic.

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:
- The user needs comprehensive research on a topic
- Multiple search queries are needed to fully answer a question
- Source credibility and synthesis matter
- A research report or documented findings are expected
- Keywords mentioned: research, investigate, deep dive, comprehensive analysis

Do NOT use this skill when:
- A single quick search will suffice (use web-search instead)
- The user just wants a simple fact lookup
- No synthesis or analysis is needed
- Time is extremely limited

## Prerequisites

Before using this skill, ensure:
- **Web search capability** is available (web-search skill, WebSearch tool, or similar)
- Sufficient time for multi-phase research process
- Clear understanding of the research question or topic
