# research-with-sources

A skill that walks the agent through evidence-driven research: every source is preserved verbatim, findings land in a draft article under research/, and each claim gets a citation.

## What it does

The skill enforces a fixed order of operations. Scan the content directory for prior work, agree on a research rubric, then start fetching. Each source is ingested the moment it is fetched, one at a time, never in a trailing batch. That is what makes the run crash-safe: an ingested source survives a dead session, a fetched-but-unwritten one does not.

The article itself is built incrementally. The skeleton appears early and findings are edited into it as each source is read, so a crash after five of eight sources leaves five sections in the knowledge base. Default output is a provisional article with `status: draft` and an inline `sources:` list in the frontmatter. A conversational answer with no document only happens when you ask for one explicitly.

It runs on any agent host with the OpenKnowledge MCP server configured, and installs project-local via `ok seed --pack knowledge-base`. Research defaults to external framing: web pages, open-source repos, papers, official APIs. Your own codebase stays out of the article unless you ask for it, since mixing the two turns factual synthesis into opinion about your organization. Promoting findings to canonical knowledge is a separate job — the sibling `consolidate-notes` skill handles that once a decision lands.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add inkeep/open-knowledge-skills --skill research-with-sources -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/research-with-sources/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/research-with-sources/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add inkeep/open-knowledge-skills --skill research-with-sources -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/research-with-sources/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add inkeep/open-knowledge-skills --skill research-with-sources -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/research-with-sources/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install inkeep/open-knowledge-skills research-with-sources
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/research-with-sources/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add inkeep/open-knowledge-skills --skill research-with-sources -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/inkeep/open-knowledge-skills --path skills/starter-packs/knowledge-base/research-with-sources
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/research-with-sources/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add inkeep/open-knowledge-skills --skill research-with-sources -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- gather sources on a topic without losing them to a crash
- compare options with citations instead of vibes
- extend an existing research doc with new findings
- record trade-offs and open questions as of today
- keep third-party facts separate from your own codebase

## Example prompts
- research how open-source job queues handle retries and write a draft under research/
- compare three PDF parsing libraries, capture every source verbatim
- update research/vector-db.md with a section on hybrid search

# Research — gather sources and write provisional findings

> This skill is pack guidance. The platform `/open-knowledge` skill (read/write/preview/linking/grounding rules) still governs every markdown operation — this layers the procedure on top.

Conduct **evidence-driven research** on a topic and produce a provisional research article under `research/`. Provisional, not canonical: research articles capture findings, trade-offs, and open questions at a point in time. They are promoted to canonical articles via the `/consolidate-notes` skill only when decisions solidify.

The content directory is the resolved `content.dir` — read it with `config({ key: 'content.dir' })` if you don't already know it. Paths below are relative to it.

## Three paths

- **Path A — Research article (DEFAULT):** A persistent provisional article with `status: draft` and an inline `sources:` frontmatter list pointing at raw sources captured via the ingest procedure. This is the default unless the user explicitly opts out.
