# research-the-market

This skill gathers real market evidence before a GTM plan gets written: where your ICP hangs out, how similar products launched, and how strangers describe the problem. Useful when the plan only echoes your own answers.

## What it does

The skill reads `docs/gtm-cofounder/founder-brief.md` — product, ICP, alternatives, stage — then goes looking for what the brief leaves out. It writes `docs/gtm-cofounder/market-research.md`, and every finding carries a link. Five tracks: the specific communities and newsletters where your ICP already talks about the problem; launches of 3 to 5 comparable products from roughly the last three years and what brought them their first users; 10 to 20 public posts where people describe the pain in their own words; rivals you never named; and openings you missed.

If the agent can browse or search, it does the work itself. If it cannot, it says so up front and hands you 8 to 12 exact queries to run, then analyses what you paste back. Inventing a community or a member count is off the table — a finding without a link does not make the file.

Venues get ranked by audience fit rather than size, and each one is checked for self-promotion rules. A channel that bans you on the first post is not a channel. The sprint is bounded at roughly 20 to 40 searches. Findings are tagged `[researched]`: planning-grade evidence, but not proof of pain and not a basis for pricing. Where the research contradicts the brief, the skill proposes an edit instead of rewriting the brief itself.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AIDevGTM/gtm-cofounder --skill 19-research-the-market -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/19-research-the-market/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/19-research-the-market/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AIDevGTM/gtm-cofounder --skill 19-research-the-market -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/19-research-the-market/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AIDevGTM/gtm-cofounder --skill 19-research-the-market -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/19-research-the-market/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install AIDevGTM/gtm-cofounder 19-research-the-market
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/19-research-the-market/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AIDevGTM/gtm-cofounder --skill 19-research-the-market -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/AIDevGTM/gtm-cofounder --path skills/19-research-the-market
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/19-research-the-market/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AIDevGTM/gtm-cofounder --skill 19-research-the-market -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/AIDevGTM/gtm-cofounder/tree/HEAD/skills/19-research-the-market/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- find the specific communities where your ICP discusses the problem
- break down how comparable products launched and what worked
- collect problem descriptions from public posts by strangers
- surface competitors the brief never named
- check each venue's self-promotion rules before posting

## Example prompts
- Research the market from `docs/gtm-cofounder/founder-brief.md` and save the report to `docs/gtm-cofounder/market-research.md`
- Find 5 to 10 venues where my ICP talks about this problem, with links and self-promo rules
- Collect 10 to 20 public posts where people describe this pain in their own words

# Research the market (what you didn't tell me)

> The brief is what you know. A plan built only from the brief can only rearrange your own answers back to you. This is the step where the agent goes out and finds what you don't know yet: where your users actually are, how products like yours got their first users, and the openings you haven't seen.

**Use this when:** you've just written the brief and want a plan grounded in the real market, not just your own read. Or you're about to pick channels or plan a launch and "post on Reddit and HN" is the best idea on the table. Or the roadmap you got back felt like a tidy summary of what you said.

## The core idea

The interview pulls out what's in your head. Research brings in what isn't: the specific subreddit where your ICP complained about this exact problem last week, the newsletter they all read, the three products in your space that launched in the last two years and what actually brought their first users, the competitor you didn't name.

**Research is planning-grade evidence, not proof.** Public evidence that 40 people asked for this in a GitHub issue is strong enough to plan a channel around. It is not strong enough to call the pain validated or to set a price. So it gets its own tag, `[researched]`, between `[assumption]` and `[validated]`. Only a real conversation with a real user who is not a friend earns `[validated]`.

## Before you start: can your agent see the web?
