## What it does

This skill takes an unpolished research idea and refines it into a focused method proposal. Phase 0 freezes an immutable Problem Anchor. Next, the agent scans up to 15 local grounding papers to draft an initial proposal. An external reviewer model (`gpt-6-astra` via Codex MCP) evaluates the plan, prompting full document rewrites until the score hits 9 or 5 rounds conclude.

State is saved to `refine-logs/REFINE_STATE.json` after every completed phase. If an API timeout occurs, the session resumes from its last checkpoint within 24 hours. The workflow imposes strict structural boundaries. It permits at most 3 core experiments, 2 primary claims, and 2 new trainable components.

A configured reviewer backend like Codex MCP is mandatory for these evaluation rounds. Without it, the reviewer slot halts with `REVIEW_UNAVAILABLE`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill research-refine -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/research-refine/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/research-refine/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill research-refine -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/research-refine/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill research-refine -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/research-refine/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep research-refine
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/research-refine/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill research-refine -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --path skills/research-refine
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/research-refine/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill research-refine -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep/tree/HEAD/skills/research-refine/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- Refine a vague research direction into a structured method proposal
- Prevent project scope creep using explicit limits on claims and components
- Run multi-round automated peer reviews against an external model
- Resume interrupted planning runs from persistent JSON checkpoints

## Example prompts
- /research-refine "hallucination mitigation in VLMs | test-time feature filtering"
- refine my approach: scaling reasoning models during inference
- refine research plan: latency-aware distillation for vision transformers

# Research Refine: Problem-Anchored, Elegant, Frontier-Aware Plan Refinement

> **Before each reviewer slot**, follow [Selectable Reviewers](../shared-references/reviewer-backends.md):
> resolve invocation → `.aris/reviewer.json` → Claude Code default (Codex MCP)
> with `reviewer_route.py` through the canonical helper resolver, preserving this
> slot's tier, fresh contexts, source/image inputs and deterministic gates.
> Codex examples/pins below apply only to `backend=codex`; other routes use their

> unavailable selections are `REVIEW_UNAVAILABLE`. Classify acceptance from actual

## Overview

Use this skill when the research problem is already visible but the technical route is still fuzzy. The goal is not to produce a bloated proposal or a benchmark shopping list. The goal is to turn a vague direction into a **problem -> focused method -> minimal validation** document that is concrete enough to implement, elegant enough to feel paper-worthy, and current enough to resonate in the foundation-model era.

Four principles dominate this skill:

1. **Do not lose the original problem.** Freeze an immutable **Problem Anchor** and reuse it in every round.
2. **The smallest adequate mechanism wins.** Prefer the minimal intervention that directly fixes the bottleneck.
3. **One paper, one dominant contribution.** Prefer one sharp thesis plus at most one supporting contribution.
