## What it does

The skill outlines academic papers following IEEE or ACM formatting requirements. Before generating text, it clarifies the research question, target publication venue, page limit, and required sections. Sections are drafted sequentially: methodology and system design come first, followed by the introduction, related work, experimental evaluation, and finally the abstract.

By default, it targets IEEE two-column A4 layouts using Times New Roman (10 pt body text, 24 pt title). Academic tone guidelines enforce third-person perspective, exact acronym definitions on first use, and quantitative claims over subjective modifiers. For citations, the workflow targets at least 15–20 references mixing foundational papers with recent literature from the last 5 years.

Without your raw test data, architecture decisions, or measurements, the model cannot invent credible experimental sections. Prepare your technical evidence beforehand to get an accurate manuscript.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ailabs-393/ai-labs-claude-skills --skill research-paper-writer -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/research-paper-writer/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/research-paper-writer/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ailabs-393/ai-labs-claude-skills --skill research-paper-writer -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/research-paper-writer/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ailabs-393/ai-labs-claude-skills --skill research-paper-writer -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/research-paper-writer/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install ailabs-393/ai-labs-claude-skills research-paper-writer
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/research-paper-writer/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ailabs-393/ai-labs-claude-skills --skill research-paper-writer -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/ailabs-393/ai-labs-claude-skills --path dist/skills/research-paper-writer
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/research-paper-writer/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add ailabs-393/ai-labs-claude-skills --skill research-paper-writer -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/ailabs-393/ai-labs-claude-skills/tree/HEAD/dist/skills/research-paper-writer/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- format academic manuscripts according to IEEE or ACM conference specifications
- structure a literature review comparing existing methods with your approach
- draft a 150-250 word abstract summarizing research contributions
- organize a bibliography of 15-20 references in numbered citation format

## Example prompts
- Write an IEEE format research paper on cache invalidation in distributed databases
- Draft the Related Work section and compare our approach with baseline methods
- Structure an ACM conference paper abstract and outline based on my experimental data

# Research Paper Writer

## Overview

This skill guides the creation of formal academic research papers that meet publication standards for IEEE and ACM conferences/journals. It ensures proper structure, formatting, academic writing style, and comprehensive coverage of research topics.

## Workflow

### 1. Understanding the Research Topic

When asked to write a research paper:

1. **Clarify the topic and scope** with the user:
   - What is the main research question or contribution?
   - What is the target audience (conference, journal, general academic)?
   - What is the desired length (page count or word count)?
   - Are there specific sections required?
   - What formatting standard to use (IEEE or ACM)?

2. **Gather context** if needed:
   - Review any provided research materials, data, or references
   - Understand the domain and technical background
   - Identify key related work or existing research to reference

### 2. Paper Structure

Follow this standard academic paper structure:

```
1. Title and Abstract
   - Concise title reflecting the main contribution
   - Abstract: 150-250 words summarizing purpose, methods, results, conclusions
2. Introduction
   - Motivation and problem statement
   - Research gap and significance
   - Main contributions (typically 3-5 bullet points)
   - Paper organization paragraph
3. Related Work / Background
   - Literature review of relevant research
   - Comparison with existing approaches
   - Positioning of current work
4. Methodology / Approach / System Design
   - Detailed description of proposed method/system
   - Architecture diagrams if applicable
   - Algorithms or procedures
   - Design decisions and rationale
5. Implementation (if applicable)
   - Technical details
   - Tools and technologies used
   - Challenges and solutions
6. Evaluation / Experiments / Results
   - Experimental setup
   - Datasets or test scenarios
   - Performance metrics
   - Results presentation (tables, graphs)
   - Analysis and interpretation
7. Discussion
   - Implications of results
   - Limitations and threats to validity
   - Lessons learned
8. Conclusion and Future Work
   - Summary of contributions
