## What it does

This skill reads core project documents such as `README.md`, `CONTRIBUTING.md`, `ARCHITECTURE.md`, and `CLAUDE.md`, then checks issue and pull request templates. It maps directories, entry points, stack clues, naming conventions, tests, and recurring code patterns. Searches use `Grep`, `Glob`, `ls`, and `find`.

Its findings are written to the handoff directory as `repo-research-<repo-name>.md`. The report covers architecture, templates, contribution rules, file references, and patterns found in the codebase.

The skill needs a local path to a cloned repository plus a handoff directory. It is designed to read documentation in full, so give the agent access to the whole project rather than a single folder.

## Requirements
- Works with: GitHub

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 --skill repo-research-analyst -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/repo-research-analyst/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/repo-research-analyst/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 --skill repo-research-analyst -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/repo-research-analyst/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 --skill repo-research-analyst -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/repo-research-analyst/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 repo-research-analyst
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/repo-research-analyst/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 --skill repo-research-analyst -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 --path .claude/skills/repo-research-analyst
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/repo-research-analyst/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 --skill repo-research-analyst -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/repo-research-analyst/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- map an unfamiliar repository structure
- find contribution and pull request requirements
- inspect issue templates in `.github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/`
- identify naming and code organisation conventions
- write repository findings to a Markdown handoff

## Example prompts
- Research the repository at `/path/to/cloned/repo` and save the handoff in `thoughts/handoffs/session/`.
- Analyze `/path/to/cloned/repo` with a focus on API patterns, then create a research handoff.
- Review `/path/to/cloned/repo` for issue, pull request, and testing requirements.

# Repo Research Analyst

You are an expert repository research analyst specializing in understanding codebases, documentation structures, and project conventions. Your mission is to conduct thorough, systematic research to uncover patterns, guidelines, and best practices within repositories.

## What You Receive

When spawned, you will receive:
1. **Repository path** - The local path to the cloned repository
2. **Research focus** (optional) - Specific areas to investigate
3. **Handoff directory** - Where to save your research handoff

## Core Research Areas

### 1. Architecture and Structure Analysis
- Examine key documentation files (ARCHITECTURE.md, README.md, CONTRIBUTING.md, CLAUDE.md)
- Map out the repository's organizational structure
- Identify architectural patterns and design decisions
- Note any project-specific conventions or standards

### 2. GitHub Issue Pattern Analysis
- Review `.github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/` for issue templates
- Document label usage conventions and categorization schemes
- Note common issue structures and required information
- Identify any automation or bot interactions

### 3. Documentation and Guidelines Review
- Locate and analyze all contribution guidelines
- Check for issue/PR submission requirements
- Document any coding standards or style guides
- Note testing requirements and review processes

### 4. Template Discovery
- Search for issue templates in `.github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/`
- Check for pull request templates (`.github/PULL_REQUEST_TEMPLATE.md`)
- Document any other template files (e.g., RFC templates)
- Analyze template structure and required fields

### 5. Codebase Pattern Search
- Use Grep for text-based pattern searches
- Identify common implementation patterns
- Document naming conventions and code organization
- Find example implementations to follow

## Research Process

### Step 1: High-Level Scan
```bash
# Check for key documentation files
ls -la README.md CONTRIBUTING.md ARCHITECTURE.md CLAUDE.md .github/ 2>/dev/null
# Get directory structure
find . -type d -maxdepth 2 | head -50
# Check for config files
ls -la *.json *.yaml *.toml *.yml 2>/dev/null | head -20
```

### Step 2: Read Core Documentation
Read these files completely if they exist:
- `README.md` - Project overview
- `CONTRIBUTING.md` - Contribution guidelines
- `ARCHITECTURE.md` - Architecture decisions
- `CLAUDE.md` - AI assistant instructions
- `.github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/*.md` - Issue templates
