## What it does

The skill separates an application clone from the original project identity before running `/replica-launch`. It starts by reading positioning notes from `replica/fixes.md`, generating 20 name candidates across descriptive, compound, invented, metaphor, and verb styles. It narrows them down to 5 names that avoid confusing similarity with the original. It then formats a screening matrix across US, EU, Canada, and WIPO trademark databases, whois domains, app stores, and social handles. These checks are screening passes rather than legal clearance.

Next, it selects a new primary hue from an unrelated color family and tests contrast with `python3 ../replica-design/contrast.py replica/design/tokens.json` to ensure zero AA failures. It generates a logo brief covering 16px favicons up to 1024px app icons, outlines three voice keywords, and rewrites the 10 most common UI strings. Brand rules, domains, and avoided terms are saved to `replica/brand.md` and `replica/brand.json`.

Finally, the cleanup tool checks the repository: `python3 sweep.py . --config replica/brand.json`. The script inspects file names and file contents for leftover names, domain strings, and hex colors, ignoring `node_modules`, build output, and the `replica/` directory. An exit code of 1 signals that remnants remain. Running the sweep and contrast scripts requires Python 3.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Jakeschincariol/replica-skill --skill replica-brand -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/replica-brand/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/replica-brand/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Jakeschincariol/replica-skill --skill replica-brand -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/replica-brand/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Jakeschincariol/replica-skill --skill replica-brand -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/replica-brand/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Jakeschincariol/replica-skill replica-brand
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/replica-brand/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Jakeschincariol/replica-skill --skill replica-brand -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Jakeschincariol/replica-skill --path replica-brand
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/replica-brand/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Jakeschincariol/replica-skill --skill replica-brand -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Jakeschincariol/replica-skill/tree/HEAD/replica-brand/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- generate distinct name candidates without trademark overlap
- build a screening checklist for trademark databases and handles
- test custom brand palette tokens against WCAG AA contrast
- draft a logo specification for favicon and app icon assets
- purge original project names and colors from repository code

## Example prompts
- name my app and pick colours
- rebrand the clone and write a logo brief
- check for leftovers from the original app using sweep.py

  Names and rebrands an app clone so it is the user's own: name candidates
  with the trademark, domain, store and handle checks to run, a new palette
  checked for contrast, a logo brief, a voice guide, and a sweep tool that
  finds anything of the original left in the codebase. Use when the user says
  "name my app", "rebrand the clone", "make it mine", "pick a name and
  colours", "logo brief", "brand voice", "check for leftovers", or after
  /replica-entrepreneur. Always runs before /replica-launch.

# replica-brand

Nothing launches under the original's identity. This skill is the line
between "a clone" and "your app".

Tool in this folder:

```bash
python3 sweep.py . --avoid "Original Name,Its Company" --domains original.com --colors "#006bff"
python3 sweep.py . --config replica/brand.json        # same, from the brand file
```

Writes `replica/brand.md` and `replica/brand.json` (`avoid`, `domains`,
`colors`, used by `sweep.py`, `listing.py` and replica-deploy).

## Step 1: the name

Read the angle from `replica/fixes.md`. Generate 20 candidates across styles:
descriptive (Booklink), compound (Slotwise), invented (Calvo), metaphor
(Harbor), verb (Book). Then cut to 5 with these filters:

- **Not confusingly similar to the original** in sound, look or meaning, and
  not to any other app in the same category. That is the test trademark
  offices use, so it is the test here. No puns on their name, no "-ly" twin.
- Short, spellable after hearing it once, no awkward meaning in big languages.
- Says something about the angle, or at least does not fight it.

## Step 2: the checks, run, not assumed

For each of the 5, a row per check. Mark each **to run**, or the result with
the date it was run. Never write "available" for a check nobody ran.

| check | where |
| --- | --- |
| US trademark | tmsearch.uspto.gov, the app's class (usually 9 and 42) |
| EU trademark | euipo.europa.eu eSearch, or TMview for many offices |
| Canada | ised-isde.canada.ca trademarks database |
| global | WIPO Global Brand Database |
| domain | `whois name.com`, or the registrar's search |
| App Store and Play | search the exact name |
| handles | X, Instagram, TikTok, GitHub |
| the web | search "name + category" |

These are screening checks, not legal clearance. Before spending money on
the name, a trademark lawyer should do a proper search.
