## What it does

This skill handles scaling work on Render: manual instance counts, autoscaling, compute plan choice and cost. It ships reference files under `references/` — `compute-plans.md`, `persistent-disks.md`, `autoscaling-guide.md` — and the agent pulls them in when a question goes past the basics.

Autoscaling needs a Pro workspace or higher. You set minimum and maximum instances plus CPU and memory targets, each between 1 and 90%. At least one metric has to be on, otherwise autoscaling is disabled. When both a manual instance count and a `scaling` block are configured, autoscaling wins, so `numInstances` will not cap it.

Some limits are worth knowing before you plan anything. A service with a persistent disk stays single-instance, static sites do not scale, and the scaling model does not apply to cron jobs or Workflows. The ceiling is 100 instances per service. Scale-up happens immediately; scale-down waits a few minutes to avoid flapping on short load spikes.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add render-oss/skills --skill render-scaling -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/render-scaling/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/render-scaling/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add render-oss/skills --skill render-scaling -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/render-scaling/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add render-oss/skills --skill render-scaling -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/render-scaling/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install render-oss/skills render-scaling
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/render-scaling/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add render-oss/skills --skill render-scaling -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/render-oss/skills --path skills/render-scaling
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/render-scaling/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add render-oss/skills --skill render-scaling -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/render-oss/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/render-scaling/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- set instance count by hand through the Dashboard, CLI or API
- turn on autoscaling and pick min/max values
- decide between a bigger plan and more instances
- find out why a disk-attached service will not scale
- diagnose slow scale-down or stuck instances

## Example prompts
- Set up autoscaling for my web service: min 1, max 10, target CPU 70%
- Why won't my Render service scale past one instance?
- Pick a compute plan for my current load and tell me where I'm overpaying

# Render Scaling

This skill covers how to scale **Web Services**, **Private Services**, and **Background Workers** on Render: manual instance counts, autoscaling with a **Pro workspace or higher**, compute plan choices, and platform limits. Deeper guidance lives under `references/`.

When a service has or might need an attached disk, read `references/persistent-disks.md` before choosing a scaling architecture.

## When to Use

- Setting or changing **instance count** (Dashboard, CLI, API, or Blueprint)
- Configuring **autoscaling** (min/max, CPU and memory targets)
- Choosing **vertical** (plan) vs **horizontal** (more instances) scaling
- Understanding **constraints** (disks, static sites, cron/workflows, 100-instance cap)
- **Cost** implications of running more or larger instances
- **Blueprint** fields: `numInstances`, `scaling`, `plan`

## Manual Scaling

- Set **instance count** from **1 to 100** via the **Dashboard**, **CLI**, or **API**.
- **All instances share the same compute plan**; you cannot mix plans on one service.
- Changes apply **immediately**: Render **provisions** new instances and **deprovisions** excess capacity as needed.

## Autoscaling

Before recommending an autoscaling policy, establish the service type, workspace plan, whether the service is stateless or has a disk, the desired minimum and maximum instance counts, and whether CPU or memory is the limiting resource.

- Available only with a **Pro workspace or higher**.
- Configure **minimum** and **maximum** instances and targets for **CPU** and/or **memory** utilization (**1–90%** each).
- **At least one metric must be enabled** (CPU or memory). If **both** CPU and memory autoscaling toggles are **off**, autoscaling is **disabled**.
- If **both** manual instance settings and autoscaling are configured, **autoscaling wins**—manual count does not override the scaling policy in effect.

## Autoscaling Formula

Render computes a candidate instance count from utilization vs target:

`new_instances = ceil(current_instances * (current_utilization / target_utilization))`

- When **both** CPU and memory targets are set, the platform uses the **larger** of the two `new_instances` values (the more conservative scale-out).

## Scaling Constraints
