## What it does

This skill covers Render Key Value, a managed in-memory store running Valkey 8 that works with existing Redis client libraries. The agent gets ready-made `render.yaml` patterns: service type `keyvalue`, plan, region, `maxmemoryPolicy`, and the required `ipAllowList` field. Wiring the connection string into an app goes through `fromService` with `type: keyvalue` and `property: connectionString`, usually as a `REDIS_URL` variable.

The real decision is the eviction policy. For caches and session stores the skill points to `allkeys-lru`, since losing keys there is tolerable. For a job queue it points to `noeviction` — under `allkeys-lru` eviction will drop queued jobs. The internal URL (`redis://red-xxx:6379`) needs no auth and travels over the private network, while the external one (`rediss://`) requires TLS and stays disabled until you add IP ranges to the access list. Turning on required auth for internal connections breaks clients that connect without credentials, so migrate them to the authenticated URL first.

Persistence differs by plan. Paid instances write to disk with `appendfsync everysec`; free instances have no disk, so a restart or an upgrade wipes everything. Worth knowing before you put anything irreplaceable there. The skill points to separate references for compute plans, private networking, client code in Node.js, Python, Ruby and Go, plus auth and `connection refused` troubleshooting.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add render-oss/skills --skill render-keyvalue -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/render-keyvalue/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/render-keyvalue/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add render-oss/skills --skill render-keyvalue -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/render-keyvalue/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add render-oss/skills --skill render-keyvalue -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/render-keyvalue/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install render-oss/skills render-keyvalue
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/render-keyvalue/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add render-oss/skills --skill render-keyvalue -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/render-oss/skills --path skills/render-keyvalue
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/render-keyvalue/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add render-oss/skills --skill render-keyvalue -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/render-oss/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/render-keyvalue/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- add a cache to a web app on Render
- wire a queue backend for Celery, Sidekiq or BullMQ
- pick a maxmemory policy for a cache versus a job queue
- set ipAllowList in a Blueprint without a validation error
- debug auth failures or connection refused errors

## Example prompts
- Add a keyvalue service to render.yaml for caching and wire REDIS_URL into the app
- Which maxmemoryPolicy should I use for a Sidekiq job queue?
- Set up external access to Key Value for local development

# Render Key Value

Render Key Value provides low-latency, Redis-compatible in-memory storage running **Valkey 8**. Use it as a shared cache, session store, or job queue backend. Compatible with virtually all Redis client libraries.

## When to Use

- Adding a **cache** or **session store** to a web app
- Wiring a **job queue** backend for Celery, Sidekiq, BullMQ, Asynq, or Oban
- Choosing the right **maxmemory policy** (cache vs queue)
- Configuring **ipAllowList** in Blueprints (required field)
- Connecting via **internal vs external URLs**
- Troubleshooting **auth failures** or **connection refused** errors

For background worker setup and queue framework patterns, see **render-background-workers**. For Blueprint authoring, see **render-blueprints**.

Before configuring or troubleshooting an internal Key Value connection, read `references/private-networking.md`.

## Key Concepts

### Valkey 8 (not Redis)

New instances run **Valkey 8**, an open-source Redis fork. It is a drop-in replacement for Redis—existing Redis client libraries work without changes. Legacy instances (created before Feb 2025) run Redis 6.

### Connection URLs

Every instance has two URLs:

| URL type | When to use | Auth required |
|----------|-------------|---------------|
| **Internal** (`redis://red-xxx:6379`) | From Render services in the same workspace and region | No (by default) |
| **External** (`rediss://red-xxx:6379`) | From outside Render (local dev, CI) | Always |

**Always prefer the internal URL** for production services—lower latency, no TLS overhead, communicates over the private network.
