## What it does

This skill steers the agent through writing and editing `render.yaml`, the file that describes Render infrastructure in YAML. It covers top-level keys (`services`, `databases`, `envVarGroups`, `projects`, `previews`), service types (`web`, `pserv`, `worker`, `cron`, `keyvalue`) and runtimes from `node` to `docker` and `static`.

A big chunk is cross-service wiring. Instead of hardcoded secrets, env vars pull values through `fromDatabase`, `fromService` and `fromGroup`. For multi-service apps there is the `projects`/`environments` model: production and staging live in one file, and `previews` defines per-pull-request environments. Reference docs on environment variables, private networking, persistent disks and compute plans sit inside the skill, and the agent reads them before touching anything.

Two things to line up first. Blueprint sync needs a Git repository on GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket, and `render blueprints validate` works best with Render CLI v2.7.0 or newer. Also worth knowing: some fields are immutable once a resource exists, and the skill walks through those errors — if you are editing a live service, check whether the field can change at all before you rewrite it.

## Requirements
- Works with: PostgreSQL

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add render-oss/skills --skill render-blueprints -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/render-blueprints/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/render-blueprints/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add render-oss/skills --skill render-blueprints -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/render-blueprints/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add render-oss/skills --skill render-blueprints -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/render-blueprints/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install render-oss/skills render-blueprints
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/render-blueprints/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add render-oss/skills --skill render-blueprints -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/render-oss/skills --path skills/render-blueprints
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/render-blueprints/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add render-oss/skills --skill render-blueprints -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/render-oss/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/render-blueprints/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write a `render.yaml` from scratch for a web service and PostgreSQL
- wire env vars to a database with `fromDatabase`
- split production and staging across `projects` and `environments`
- set up preview environments for pull requests
- fix an immutable field error on an existing resource

## Example prompts
- Write a render.yaml with a node web service and managed PostgreSQL, pull the connection string via fromDatabase
- Group api, worker and keyvalue into project my-app with production and staging environments
- Validate my render.yaml and tell me which fields I can't change after creation

# Render Blueprints (render.yaml)

Blueprints define Render infrastructure as YAML (commonly `render.yaml` at the repo root). This skill focuses on **authoring**, **wiring**, **projects/environments**, **previews**, **validation**, and **immutable fields**. Heavy detail lives under `references/`.

Before creating or modifying a Blueprint, read `references/blueprints.md` for the current specification-fetch, validation, repository-sync, and safety workflow.

For current compute-plan terminology, Plan IDs, and availability, use `references/compute-plans.md` instead of relying on plan catalogs embedded in examples.

Before adding or changing a service-attached disk, read `references/persistent-disks.md` for current architectural constraints and configuration workflow.

Before wiring private-network addresses, ports, or discovery hostnames, read `references/private-networking.md`.

Before choosing a service type or translating its Dashboard name to Blueprint structure, read `references/service-types.md`.

## When to Use

Apply this skill when the user:

- Creates or edits a `render.yaml` / Blueprint
- Wires databases, private services, or Key Value into app env vars
- Groups services with **projects** and **environments**
- Configures **preview environments** for pull requests
- Validates YAML against Render’s schema or CLI
- Asks what can or cannot change after a resource is created
```
