## What it does

The skill enforces a strict verification workflow for releasing Kotlin libraries. It inspects repository state, executes Gradle checks via `gradle-run` with `--no-scan`, and updates Metalava `api/api.txt` snapshots. Prerelease changelog entries get folded into a `<details>` block under the stable summary. Crucially, the agent stops and waits for explicit user confirmation before touching Git tags or triggering a build.

Your build must apply `com.vanniktech.maven.publish` directly or through a convention plugin. If that plugin is missing, the skill halts before mutating any files. It will not migrate or reconfigure your Gradle scripts on its own, which keeps your build setup intact. Credentials for local publication are loaded as data from `~/.env` rather than sourced in a shell, while tag-driven CI relies on existing repository secrets.

Verification does not end with a passing command. The skill inspects the destination to confirm artifacts actually exist and verifies that the remote Git tag points to the release commit. Only then does it bump the project to the next development version.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrisbanes/skills --skill release-kotlin-library -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/release-kotlin-library/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/release-kotlin-library/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrisbanes/skills --skill release-kotlin-library -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/release-kotlin-library/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrisbanes/skills --skill release-kotlin-library -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/release-kotlin-library/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install chrisbanes/skills release-kotlin-library
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/release-kotlin-library/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrisbanes/skills --skill release-kotlin-library -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/chrisbanes/skills --path skills/release-kotlin-library
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/release-kotlin-library/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add chrisbanes/skills --skill release-kotlin-library -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- verify Kotlin library readiness before release
- reconcile Metalava API snapshots with current code
- structure changelog entries with grouped prerelease history
- verify published artifacts and remote Git tags

## Example prompts
- Review the repository readiness for a new Kotlin library release
- Prepare the release commit, update changelog and API snapshots
- Publish the prepared Kotlin library release and verify artifacts

# Release Kotlin library

## Core principle

Publish the prepared, validated, user-approved release commit and call the release complete
only after verifying its artifacts and Git state.

## Prerequisite

This skill relies on `gradle-maven-publish-plugin` (`com.vanniktech.maven.publish`)
for library publication, whether run locally or through tag-triggered CI.
API snapshot support assumes Metalava-generated `api/api.txt` files; disable
snapshots when the repository does not maintain them.

## Procedure

1. Establish scope and inspect repository instructions, Git state, release
   history, version properties, publishing configuration and required checks.
   If the user limits review to supplied state, run no commands and mark
   unsupplied state unknown. Confirm, from build files or supplied repository facts, that published
   modules apply `com.vanniktech.maven.publish` directly or via a convention
   plugin; declaration alone is insufficient. If absent
   or unverified, report it and stop before release mutations; do not install
   or migrate publishing plugins.
   Distinguish readiness review, preparation and explicit release authorization;
   select the matching finish path before proceeding.
   For recovery or recovery review, select and read the
   [recovery answer form](references/recovery-output.md) before analysis. For
   changelog-related review, also read [the changelog procedure](references/changelog.md).
   For preparation or changelog-only work, read the
   [preparation answer form](references/preparation-output.md) completely, in
   its own call, before analysis.
   Keep reviews read-only, including credentials. Follow the existing local or
   CI publishing mechanism; do not migrate it. Read the
   [helper contract](references/helper.md) before configuring the bundled script.
   Stop before mutation on unsupported layouts or ambiguous destinations.
2. Before preparation, read [the changelog procedure](references/changelog.md)
   completely; resolve baseline, version and coverage ambiguity. Do not guess
   or create a changelog.
3. Identify repository release checks, including tests and Metalava API
   generation and compatibility checks where configured. Confirm that API files
   are current before snapshotting; the helper copies them without running
