## What it does

The skill walks the agent through four steps: assess whether the product is ready, map its natural viral loops, design the incentive structure, then measure the referral funnel. It ships with templates — a readiness checklist, a three-phase build based on the Airbnb model, six strategies for raising sharing rate, the K-factor formula, a metrics dashboard, and a taxonomy of seven virality types. There is also a Purple Cow test for whether the product is worth a remark in the first place.

The material comes from episodes of Lenny's Podcast and the newsletter, with quotes and a list of common mistakes. The skill is blunt about one thing: a referral program only adds fuel to an existing fire, so build it after most signups already arrive organically. If the product is not meaningfully faster, cheaper or easier than the alternatives, synthetic loops will not fix that.

The most practical part is the questions it asks you first: what share of signups come from direct and organic channels, where is the moment a user would actually tell a friend about, is the product naturally multiplayer. Your answers decide whether to start now. The skill installs into Claude, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI and OpenCode.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill referrals-word-of-mouth -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/referrals-word-of-mouth/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/referrals-word-of-mouth/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill referrals-word-of-mouth -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/referrals-word-of-mouth/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill referrals-word-of-mouth -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/referrals-word-of-mouth/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install RefoundAI/lenny-skills referrals-word-of-mouth
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/referrals-word-of-mouth/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill referrals-word-of-mouth -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/RefoundAI/lenny-skills --path skills/referrals-word-of-mouth
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/referrals-word-of-mouth/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill referrals-word-of-mouth -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/RefoundAI/lenny-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/referrals-word-of-mouth/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- decide whether the product is ready for a referral program
- find the natural moments where users share the product
- set rewards that stay inside CAC limits
- move the referral program out of a buried settings menu
- measure K-factor and see how many new users one user brings

## Example prompts
- run the readiness checklist and tell me if my product is ready for a referral program
- map the viral loops in my onboarding and suggest where to place the invite
- calculate the K-factor from this data and tell me what to fix first

# Referrals and Word-of-Mouth

Turn user satisfaction into a high-leverage growth engine through organic advocacy and structured referral loops.

Help the user with referrals and word-of-mouth using insights from 13 guests and posts across Lenny's Podcast and Newsletter.

## How to Help

1. **Assess readiness** - Determine if the product has sufficient organic word-of-mouth and retention to support a formal referral program.
2. **Identify viral loops** - Map out the product natural social actions to choose the right type of virality such as word-of-mouth, invitation, or experiential.
3. **Design incentives** - Craft a reward structure that balances selfish, altruistic, and FOMO motivations within CAC limits.
4. **Optimize and scale** - Measure the referral funnel and place touchpoints throughout the user journey to maximize discoverability.

## Core Principles

### Remarkableness as a Core Value
Rahul Vohra: "It is word of mouth. It is the virality you can't measure that isn't a mechanic that isn't in a feature. It is when one user spontaneously tells another user about your product."

Sustainable growth is earned through extraordinary quality and delight that makes a product worthy of spontaneous attention rather than temporary gimmicks.

### The 10x Performance Threshold
Nilan Peiris: "But to get to recommendation, you're going to blow your user socks off. You have to give them an experience they didn't know was previously possible. And when you are in that place of doing something that no one has ever done before, that's when you get it."

To trigger true word-of-mouth, the product must be exponentially better than the status quo, typically by being significantly faster, cheaper, or easier to use.

### Accelerate Existing Organic Growth
From "Building a referrals program": "The added incentive that a referral program offers simply adds fuel to an existing fire. I haven’t seen referrals work when there wasn’t strong existing WOM."
