## What it does

The skill produces a guardrail spec for a customer referral program: rules with thresholds, verification gates, a reward-hold policy, an enforcement ladder and monitoring signals. It protects the reward structure you already run and never redesigns it. Reach for it when self-referrals, fake accounts or a referral code on a coupon forum come up.

It starts with an interview: program mechanics, reward type and value, account and identity model, which verification capabilities exist, what data can be queried, how much reward value is at risk, and how long the refund window runs. Then it maps the abuse surface and ranks six controls — event, caps, hold, eligibility, verification, review — against four axes: efficiency, value, effort and compliance cost.

Caps, hold and published eligibility come first by default. Climb to event redesign whenever the qualifying event is bare signup or an unpaid action, because nothing below it holds while the event is free to fake. One rule the skill is firm about: a rule not published in the program terms before a referral was made is not enforceable against that referral, so every rule gets designed together with its publication. Professional-affiliate traffic fraud is out of scope — that is `mbfinotti/partnerships-skills@affiliate-fraud-detection`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/partnerships-skills --skill referral-abuse-guardrails -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/referral-abuse-guardrails/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/referral-abuse-guardrails/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/partnerships-skills --skill referral-abuse-guardrails -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/referral-abuse-guardrails/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/partnerships-skills --skill referral-abuse-guardrails -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/referral-abuse-guardrails/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mbfinotti/partnerships-skills referral-abuse-guardrails
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/referral-abuse-guardrails/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/partnerships-skills --skill referral-abuse-guardrails -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mbfinotti/partnerships-skills --path skills/referral-abuse-guardrails
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/referral-abuse-guardrails/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mbfinotti/partnerships-skills --skill referral-abuse-guardrails -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- catch self-referrals and referral rings before payout
- cap how many rewards one person can collect in a period
- tie the reward hold to the purchase refund window
- tell an aggressive bargain-hunter apart from a real abuser
- publish terms that let you deny a reward

## Example prompts
- Help me define guardrails for our referral program: two-sided rewards, email signup, and self-referrals are climbing.
- Our referral code leaked to a coupon forum — which caps and gates should we ship first?
- Draft a spec with reward caps, velocity limits, cooldowns and an enforcement ladder for a B2C program.

# Referral Abuse Guardrails

Define the guardrails that stop end customers from gaming a customer refer-a-friend program, and deliver them as a guardrail spec: rules with thresholds, verification gates, a reward-hold policy, an enforcement ladder, and monitoring signals. This skill protects whatever reward structure already exists - it never redesigns it.

No ratified standard covers consumer referral abuse. Borrow exactly four things, nothing more, and only as a mental model, never as a compliance claim:

- GIVT/SIVT shape (ad-measurement standards): a cheap deterministic tier plus an expensive corroborative tier.
- OWASP OAT-019 Account Creation: the automated slice only.
- Trust-and-safety enforcement-ladder principles: proportionality, consistency, transparency, for the enforcement section.
- Sybil-attack result, as the strategic frame: fake identities can never be fully detected without a central identity authority, so every guardrail is really a cost imposed on the abuser.

The goal is making abuse unprofitable, not catching everything.
